>Communist Anti-Pope Francis: Jesus’ famous remark, “Do not make My Father’s house a marketplace!”

That’s not what Jesus said. He called it “a den of thieves”. They were gouging the faithful who needed to buy sacrifices.

I don’t see a problem with vernacular, as long as it is theologically sound and well done, which I take it is neither. Not being Catholic I wouldn’t know for sure.

But removing the bit about “the perfidious Jew” has to count for something positive.

Actually both versions are Scriptural. In Matthew, Mark, and Luke Jesus refers to the "den of thieves." In John 2.16 the word is emporion meaning a marketplace or trading place.

It was part of the Gospel reading for today and I was following along in the Greek New Testament while the English text was being read aloud and was a bit surprised that it did not say "den of thieves." I just checked the other three Gospels and they have the same phrase meaning "den of thieves" (or "cave of robbers" if you will).
