“On one hand, we have people like Cardinal Doland seemingly condoning homosexuality”

The Catholic Church teaches that homosexual acts are an intrinsic evil, never to be condoned. Blowhard Dolan ignores the teachings of the Catholic Church. He would much rather work for the democrat party and go to fund raisers and eat, drink and be merry than to actually preach the Catholic faith. He’s the biggest joke in the Catholic Church and an embarasment for all faithful Catholics.

”… or by encouraging the desire ...."

Noting that Matthew 23:13 shows that Jesus reprimanded the Pharisees for being a stumbling block to people seeking God, this is why I have trouble with Cardinal Dolan’s “open arms” stance on homosexuality.

The “blind” are following the “blind.”

I don’t know. It was already a fixture here in LA in the early 90s, when I moved to LA. It had controversial speakers back then, too, like the guy who told kids at the Youth Day part of the conference that being in gangs was ok.

Look to the source ....

Roger Cardinal Mahony

Appointed 12 July 1985
Installed 5 September 1985
Term ended 1 March 2011

Mahony was an uber progressive. This conference was initiated by him.

"He’s the biggest joke in the Catholic Church and an embarasment for all faithful Catholics."

So we evidently have to answer the question, “Is Cardinal Dolan Catholic?” differently from the question “Is the Pope Catholic?”

Why would this mortal sin be different than any other?

Homosexuality is a mental disorder most likely caused by hormonal imbalances during pregnancy. There may or may not be possible to cure it, but cures should be sought.

Under no circumstances should homosexuality be thought of as "normal" any more than people who have the desire to eat weird things or stick odd objects up their bodily orifices are normal.

And I have a sister who was a nurse in the emergency room for many years. She has some pretty funny stories about odd objects stuck in places they weren't meant to be stuck in. Usually one particular place.

this is why I have trouble with Cardinal Dolan’s “open arms” stance on homosexuality

Christ told us to take His message to all. The Church has two outreach programs - Courage and Encourage are spiritual support groups helping Catholic men, women and their families, to live in accordance with Catholic Church's pastoral teaching on homosexuality.

There is no difference in the eyes of God with the sin of adultery or the sin of homosexuality, both punished with death in the OT. We should try to help our failed brothers and sisters to "Go and sin no more" regardless of their sin.

We are all sinners.

I gladly refer you to the Catechism of the Catholic Church -- and that's the official teaching.

Chastity and homosexuality

2357 Homosexuality refers to relations between men or between women who experience an exclusive or predominant sexual attraction toward persons of the same sex. It has taken a great variety of forms through the centuries and in different cultures. Its psychological genesis remains largely unexplained.

Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity, tradition has always declared that "homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered." They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved.

2358 The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not negligible. This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for most of them a trial. They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided.

These persons are called to fulfill God's will in their lives and, if they are Christians, to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord's Cross the difficulties they may encounter from their condition. 2359 Homosexual persons are called to chastity. By the virtues of self-mastery that teach them inner freedom, at times by the support of disinterested friendship, by prayer and sacramental grace, they can and should gradually and resolutely approach Christian perfection. I don't think sodomy IS different from any other mortal sin.

Or rather, let me put it this way: every sin is, in some respects, like every other sin; in some respects, like some other sins; and in some respects, like no other sin.

“Is Cardinal Dolan Catholic?”

I would call him a fake Catholic, cafeteria Catholic, but never just a Catholic and absolutely not a faithful Catholic.
He gives Holy Communion it pro-abortion politicians and never opens his mouth about the evils of homosexuality. He caters to them. It’s a truly sordid state of affairs.

With all due respect Mrs. Don-o, please consider the following.

2358 seems to be a “rule taught by men,” I’m, that Jesus warned about in Mark 7:7-8. It also doesn’t compliment Matthew 18:15-17, 1 Corinthians 5, 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 or 1 Corinthians 15:33 imo.

Perhaps you could explain more about what you find wrong with #2358.

To summarize, it says:

All of that can be abundantly supported by Scripture, can it not? I think I could find supportive verses for each one from the Epistles of Paul.

Or did you have something else in mind?

I don't think sodomy IS different from any other mortal sin.

God disagrees.

Saint Catherine, a great mystic and Doctor of the Church, lived in troubled times. The Papacy was in exile at Avignon, France. She was instrumental in bringing the Popes back to Rome. Her famous Dialogues are written as if dictated by God Himself:

"But they act in a contrary way, for they come full of impurity to this mystery, and not only of that impurity to which, through the fragility of your weak nature, you are all naturally inclined (although reason, when free will permits, can quiet the rebellion of nature), but these wretches not only do not bridle this fragility, but do worse, committing that accursed sin against nature, and as blind and fools, with the light of their intellect darkened, they do not know the stench and misery in which they are. It is not only that this sin stinks before me, who am the Supreme and Eternal Truth, it does indeed displease me so much and I hold it in such abomination that for it alone I buried five cities by a divine judgment, my divine justice being no longer able to endure it. This sin not only displeases me as I have said, but also the devils whom these wretches have made their masters. Not that the evil displeases them because they like anything good, but because their nature was originally angelic, and their angelic nature causes them to loathe the sight of the actual commission of this enormous sin.

"Romans 1:26-28"

Thank you for referencing that passage.

And now that you’ve mentioned it, note that Romans 1:25 indicates that same-sex sexual relationships are a consequence idolatry, disobeynig the 1st Commandment in other words.

Also, please correct me if I’m wrong, but Romans 1 doesn’t clearly indicate not to associate with unrepentant sinners like Matthew 18:15-17, 1 Corinthinas 5, and 15:33 do.
