Maybe to see God, but not necessary to hear God. Just ask him what you are doing wrong and you may get an answer.

Purity of Heart is Needed to See God...We cannot see until we are washed.... “I went, I washed, and now I see.”..."But afterwards, when the stain of my past life had been washed away by means of the waters of rebirth, a light from above poured itself upon my chastened and now pure heart;"

Daily Holy Hour, daily Mass, the Liturgy of the Hours, weekly confession … only then do some things become clear, only then does that which had been in darkness come to light.

The man fails to make the distinction between the purity of heart which occurs via the washing of regeneration by which one is able to see God if he died or returned - but which he imagines the very act of baptism effects (thus most Caths have no conscious "day of salvation," and testimony of manifest regeneration) - and that of the practical progressive holiness of heart which enables better spiritual vision and judgment, that of enlightenment, even towards that which enabled Job to say he now "saw God" and repented in dust and ashes. (Job. 42:5,6)

Without making the distinction, the latter practical progressive holiness of heart is what the author is referring to in saying "I, too, have come to understand some things only after many years of prayer and growth. Daily Holy Hour, daily Mass, the Liturgy of the Hours, weekly confession...," but while quiet time and reflection and focus on spiritual things are conducive to better spiritual vision, yet such things as the Mass and worship of a piece of bread is not of Scripture, any more than a multitude other things are .

Like learned devout Nicodemus, such religionists need to be born of the Spirit by coming to God as souls damned for their works - not saved because of them - and destitute of any means or merit whereby they may escape their just and eternal punishment in Hell Fire and gain eternal life with God. And with contrite heart cast their whole-hearted repentant faith upon the mercy of God in Christ, trusting the risen Divine Lord Jesus to save them by His sinless shed blood. (Rm. 3:9 - 5:1) And whose faith is thus counted as righteousness, but it is a faith that will follow Him. Which means departing from Rome.
