Thank you for posting this! I have a friend who will want to read it. God’s providence amazes me. Only a few days ago I clumsily attempted to make this same point regarding indifference to a man in my Bible study.

My friend is in his sixties and he’s a lifelong Southern Baptist and longtime deacon in his church. About two years ago God opened his eyes and he fell in love with reformed theology. He was wise enough to spend a lot of time studying before talking too much about what had happened in his life. But now he has begun the frustrating task of attempting to teach his family and close friends, including his pastor and fellow deacons, about God’s sovereignty. Those that really understand what he’s saying are angry at him for his heresy, but most are indifferent at best.

Whenever a man’s bedrock beliefs are challenged, anger is a normal human reaction, so I understand that. It’s the indifference I don’t understand. How anyone can be indifferent about TULIP escapes me. When I was confronted with sovereign grace it turned my life upside down and I’ve never been the same.

Pastors who think it is relevant and cool to be indifferent about doctrine—who play down the necessity and importance of doctrine and who fail to preach and explain doctrine in their sermons—are in fact failing to give their people that which will save their souls. For us to downplay doctrine or to be intentionally fuzzy in preaching doctrine isn’t cool or humble or relevant, it’s outright arrogant. There is nothing more relevant than doctrine, there is nothing more humbling than doctrine, and there is nothing that more quickly gets our eyes off ourselves and fixes them on our loving and gracious God than doctrine that proceeds from God.

I guess it would depend on if it is true doctrine from the word of God or false doctrine.

As individuals we have to understand if the doctrine comes from God or the devil, the soul we save may be our own.

Matthew 22: 37-40

Jesus said unto him, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”

1 Timothy 4:16 Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.

I agree, doctrine is very important which is why I warn people about TULIP...

Limited Atonement? - (Hebrews 2:9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little * lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man)

Irresistible Grace? - (Hebrews 2:3 how will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? After it was at the first spoken through the Lord, it was confirmed to us by those who heard)

Perseverance of the Saints? - (Hebrews 6:6 - If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame., Revelation 3:5 He that overcometh , the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.)
