Obama touts Oscar Romero sainthood
The Washington Examiner ^ | May 23, 2015 | Sarah Westwood

President Obama embraced the beatification of Archbishop Oscar Romero of San Salvador Saturday ahead of celebrations in El Salvador over the controversial religious figure's progression toward sainthood.

"I join people in El Salvador and around the world today in welcoming the beatification of Archbishop Oscar Romero," Obama said. "He fearlessly confronted the evils he saw, guided by the needs of his beloved pueblo, the poor and oppressed people of El Salvador."

Romero was shot while performing Mass in 1980 just one day after imploring the country's military to abandon their orders to violently repress a leftist uprising.

Pope Francis called Romero a "martyr for the Catholic faith" Tuesday. Leaders within the Vatican had stalled his sainthood for years out of fear that his legacy was more political than religious.

"El Salvador has come a long way in the last 35 years," Obama said. "Today in El Salvador, and all of Central America, the United States is guided by the vision of Archbishop Romero."

The civil war that swept through El Salvador in Romero's lifetime and the decade that followed his death resulted in a number of human rights abuses. The country is still suffering from political unrest and rampant gang violence.

Leaders within the Vatican had stalled his sainthood for years out of fear that his legacy was more political than religious.

And now look who's made it political already. This occurs just shortly after Francis, the so-called "receiver of revelation", the socialist Obama and the communist Castro engaged in secret, sneaky negotiations to further prop up a communist, atheistic country.

as a Catholic I wish the Pope what focus on getting the gay Mafia out of the Vatican, pushing the pro family agenda, making it clear that it is not a democracy that the laws of the church are what they are, and stop with the environmentalism and socialist stuff,
his job is to get Catholics to volunteer and to help others and to donate. It is not his job to help governmenrs force people to handle the money.

The lavender mafia spent decades to get to the Curia, they’ll wage total war to stay there.

Cardinal Burke was only the first casualty against them. Satan must be thrilled.

It is the “modern” outlook by the Church which drives many away.

Such outlooks are seen in some local Catholic Churches which do not seem to care about the appearance of the church itself nor do anything to attract attention to their existance. So people do not come.

I can’t believe the referendum on gay marriage passed in Ireland. And that is a striking blow to the Catholic Church. the times are certainly changing. gay marriage lol. I’ll never stop laughing when I hear that term

I saw a documentary with Bishop would have sex parties with gay strippers and then serve mass in the morning. I am Catholic and I don’t know what happened. The older generation doesn’t want to hear a word about anything. And the younger generation is disillusiioned. or worse if they are excited that the Pope is such a hope and change Pope..in other words a Marxist

Bishop Romero was not a saint, neither a radical leftist as the Jesuits in El Salvador that were supporting the communist guerillas trained and sponsored by Castro. He was a good pastor that allowed himself to be manipulated by the clerical machinery that were involved in the side of communists against a legitimate democratic government elected by the Salvadorian people.

Nonetheless, it’s curious timing that he’s praising Romero at about the same time as articles appear identifying liberation theology as a construct of the KGB. Let’s see if he’s as effusive in his praise when Mother Theresa or JPII is beatified.

“Bishop Romero was not a saint”

I must respectfully disagree. Romero was and is a saint. His murder during Mass showed him to be following in the footsteps of Jesus Christ, Priest and Victim. Like Jesus, he spoke out against the rulers knowing it would probably mean his death. Was he not supposed to speak up for his missing, murdered priests and suffering people? He exhibited heroic fortitude and was a true prophet.

What kind of things did Romero believe in?

He believed in fidelity to Rome and in being “one mind” with the Magisterium.
He believed in the daily examination of conscience and the need for penance and mortification in the life of the follower of Christ.

He preached chastity. He was devoted to the Rosary and strongly Pro-Life.
He preached contemplative prayer, fidelity to God’s Will, and offered himself to Jesus, accepting whatever The Lord would ask of him.

He was a strong proponent of Opus Dei and sent to Rome a writing in favor of Founder St. Josemaria Escriva’s canonization.

During his 1983 visit to El Salvador, Pope St. John Paul II prayed at Archbishop Romero’s tomb.

Please do not be hoodwinked by Obama and leftists inside and outside the Church who make Romero seem way more liberal than he actually was and ignore his traditional piety.

I’m Pro-Life and Pro-Traditional Marriage and vote Republican. But when Republicanism or conservatism starts throwing around words like Socialist or Communist when the poor or workers are defended, it leaves me.

Speaking from my own experience, Christians need to stop running their faith and religion through a political strainer, and start running their politics through a faith/religion strainer.

I fully agree with you on the Christian virtues of Bishop Oscar Romero. His murder was a horrendous political crime.

Although he was not a follower of Marxist liberation theology, many priests and nuns were openly and actively supporting the communist guerrillas sponsored and trained by the Cuban Stalinist regime.

Neither Pope John Paul II, Benedict XVI and many Latin American prelates supported the canonization of Bishop Romero whose murder was exploited by the Communists around the world and used as the patron saint of the Marxist liberation theology, a movement proscribed by His Holiness John Paul II for perverting the Gospels with the main tenets of the Marxist ideology under the false pretense of helping and representing the poor.

The late Colombian Cardinal Alfonso López Trujillo – former president of the Pontifical Council for the Family, a bold defender of the natural law – opposed Romero’s beatification because he believed he was killed as a result of anarchic political violence not in odium fidei.

The Marxist liberation followers were creating a “popular church” parallel to the Church that was used by the guerrillas of the FMLN as a cover for their subversive activities.

It is noteworthy that the Bishops Conference in El Salvador withdrew the recognition as a Catholic University to the University of Central America because of activism in support of the Marxists guerrillas of the FMLN.

In spite of all the campaign disinformation about the Salvadorian civil war, most of the alleged 40,000 deaths were crimes perpetrated against the civil population by the terrorists of the FMLN. The civil war lasted from 1979-1992, and most of the time the government was democratically elected by the Salvadorian people.

Declaration made by Salvadorian bishop of Zacatecoluca, Romeo Tovar Astorga, published in “San Salvador Press” in Dec. 29, 1989.”

According to bishop Tovar Astorga:

“Immediately after concelebrating the mass at the Cathedral of our Lady of the poor in Zacatecoluca, Bishop Tovar Astorga said that he would accept to continue as mediator in the process of peace dialogue, if the FMLN will show some sincerity in wanting to end the war.” The Bishop recalled the cruelty with which the FMNL took out their offensive which was planned much before the talks began. Thus the FMNL while speaking of peace prepares for war. This, he said, cannot be condoned”

“He continued stating that at its recent meeting with Pope Juan Pablo II, he explained to the Holy Father the violent situation in El Salvador and especially mentioned the aggression against the people of Zacatecoluca FMLN. When asked if during this meeting with the Pope he had mentioned the death of six Jesuits, the Bishop Tovar Astorga replied that in the last days of the FMLN offensive there was not only six, but thousands of dead.”

“Therefore, bishop Tovar stressed it is a mistake to reduce all the violence to six people no matter how Honorable they could have been, against which the Bishop expressed his strongest condemnation.” What is then the FMLN, the defender or the murderer of the poor?”, said bishop Tovar

Nobody can question the Christian virtues of Bishop Oscar Romero. His murder was a horrendous political crime.

Bishop Romero canonization is another political savvy play by the liberation theology Pope.
