By “religion” is meant Christianity.To most of us in the west, the other faiths are known only vaguely.
True in part, but to those who do not appreciate their relevance, all religions are in the same category. Someone with that mindset may not even recognize the word Gnostic. The positive in this is a general awareness in most people sense that unguided self will is “bad” and without any religious imprimatur making it “good” such as that once supplied by Gnosticism.
