Bishop Michael Jarrell of the Diocese of Lafayette, Louisiana issued a strong statement of condemnation of the Supreme Court's decision ruling in favor of gay "marriage."
Let me state very plainly that no human court has the authority to change what God has written into the law of creation. This ruling is irreconcilable with the nature and definition of marriage as established by Divine Law. The marital covenant was established by God with its proper nature and laws.
He then goes on to counsel civil disobedience for Catholics in government roles who may be forced to legally recognize or ratify same-sex "marriages." "I realize that this ruling will create conscience problems for many Catholics, especially those in public office. In some cases, civil disobedience may be a proper response."
He also forbids clergy from participating in same-sex "marriage" services, as well as diocesan property from being used for any such events.
No priest or deacon of this Diocese may participate in the civil solemnization or celebration of a same-sex marriage. All Catholics are urged not to attend same-sex marriage ceremonies. No Catholic facility or property, including but not limited to parishes, missions, chapels, meeting halls, Catholic educational, health or charitable institutions, or facilities belonging to benevolent orders may be used for the solemnization of same sex marriage.
He goes on to discuss this fall's Synod on the Family and how today's gay "marriage" ruling may affect discussionsi there. He end with a reaffirmation of the enduring nature of Holy Matrimony.
"As Catholics, we have a profound respect for the dignity of all God's children. Nevertheless, there is no basis in law or in nature for altering the traditional definition of marriage, established by God from the beginning."
Bishop Jarrell has been head of the diocese of Lafayette since 2002.
It is shocking that:
But he had to do what he had to do in order to be utterly unambiguous, I guess.
Good for Bishop Jarrell!
(Contrast his very clear and forthright statement with the tepid squeak from Washington's own Cardinal Donna Wuerl)
For reference, the following was written by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith back in 2003:
In those situations where homosexual unions have been legally recognized or have been given the legal status and rights belonging to marriage, clear and emphatic opposition is a duty. One must refrain from any kind of formal cooperation in the enactment or application of such gravely unjust laws and, as far as possible, from material cooperation on the level of their application. In this area, everyone can exercise the right to conscientious objection.
Yea, Bishop Jarrell!
This Baptist is applauding!
Bishop Jarrell,
I am not a Catholic, but on this issue I stand with you!
This Baptist (and for Catholic) as well. God bless and protect Bishop Jarrell!
This is my Bishop, and a co-worker’s uncle.
Off to the camp with him?
Bravo!
Good man but please don’t forget to pray for archbishop Cordiolone in San Francisco. He’s in the belly of leviathan.
Bravo! Sunday morning is going to be interesting at church.
Me too!
the Catholics in his diocese elected one of the Senators that gave a YES vote to Elena Kagan.
Stupid is as stupid does.
He has met the enemy ...
And for Fr. Vito Perrone.
Sometimes you have to spell it out to not leave any doubt.
Here’s basically what our priest said this morning:
No, the Catholic Church will not change. What will probably happen is that there will be a challenge of a gay wedding somewhere, then a lawsuit, then the Catholic Church will drop its tax exempt status and stand firm for traditional marriage. Or there might be only legal marriage and no more Holy Matrimony.
Our priest spent nearly 20 minutes on this at a daily Mass today. He wont be here this weekend since he is traveling to Chicago for the weekend to be with an aunt who is dying. So we will get our Sunday sermon on this next week.
Watch it play out.
Think back to the sexual abuse and how it insidiously began with one case.
Same thing will happen here....they hate the Catholic Church because it stands for truth. So they (the homosexuals) will attack.
He should just threaten to close the schools. My way or the highway.
Sierra!
The good Bishop will probably be MARTYERED!!
Oh yes.....Archbishop Cordileone is INDEED a great and hold man and is in the Belly of the Beast, San Francisco.......he NEEDS our prayers.
