The point is that what happens if we make over such societies in the image of what the editors of, say, “The Economist,”think good?

The editors of The Economist would like even more contraception/abortion/infanticide in India, I suspect. However, in view of a general interest in prosperity, they would probably favor less corruption and a more predictable business climate.

That's a different issue from my point that the "happy, virtuous, spiritual poor people" anecdote in the article contrasted with the realities of life in India.
