Blase Cupich op-ed: Planned Parenthood and the muted humanity of the unborn child
Chicago Tribune ^ | August 3, 2015 | Blase Cupich

The [Center for Medical Progress investigative] tapes [about the collection and sale of fetal organs and parts] have generated a visceral reaction independent of how they were made or whether Planned Parenthood was making a profit. Rather, the widespread revulsion over the tapes arose because they unmasked the fact that, in our public conversation about abortion, we have so muted the humanity of the unborn child that some consider it quite acceptable to speak freely of crushing a child's skull to preserve valuable body parts and to have that discussion over lunch.... This newest evidence about the disregard for the value of human life also offers the opportunity to reaffirm our commitment as a nation to a consistent ethic of life. While commerce in the remains of defenseless children is particularly repulsive, we should be no less appalled by the indifference toward the thousands of people who die daily for lack of decent medical care; who are denied rights by a broken immigration system and by racism; who suffer in hunger, joblessness and want; who pay the price of violence in gun-saturated neighborhoods; or who are executed by the state in the name of justice.

In this unbelievable op-ed piece, Archbishop Cupich of Chicago gives lip service to the horrendous revelations of videos released by the Center for Medical Progess (https://www.youtube.com/user/centerformedprogress). He claims that the swell of shock and outrage is due to a "visceral reaction" and then goes on to redirect people's efforts to those social justice issues (ever expanding) so dear to left-wing Catholics who wear the "seamless garment" tailored by the late Cardinal Joseph Bernardin.

By claiming that unemployment, health care, immigration, and capital punishment are on a par with the butchery of unborn children and sale of their parts and organs for profit, Cupich negates the horror of these revelations. The US pro-life movement has not been taken in by such efforts to hijack its energies and commitment to the right to life as the foremost life issue.

Archbishop Cupich should hang his head in shame and apologize to the public for his asinine remarks.

The outrage expressed is not a "visceral reaction," but a "human reaction"--unlike Cupich's wooden response.

Everything Cupich says logically requires saying: We should be no more appalled by 58 million abortions and the sale of babies’ bodies than by unemployment.

When Bernardin first introduced the “Seamless Garment,” he said we must be EQUALLY concerned about abortion and nuclear war, about abortion and cuts in social spending, etc. There was a firestorm, and he backed away from those statements. Cupich has gone all the way back to that position.

Cupich’s record for 20 years could hardly be worse, when it comes to persecuting real Catholics, and issuing mealy-mouthed statements on moral issues. In fact, mealy-mouthed is what Cupich is on a GOOD day.

Cupich was hand-picked by the Pope for Chicago. He has just been hand-picked by the Pope for the Synod.

By the fruit they hand-pick you shall know them.

Most bishops do not think in the categories of moral theology, but politics.

When Cardinal Sean O’Malley was cornered by a Catholic jounalist at the National Shrine he was asked about Communion-for-Pelosi.

A real Catholic would say: Giving Communion to Nancy Pelosi is a cause of grave scandal. Therefore, it is a mortal sin to do it. Therefore, it is something that no priest or bishop can do, or pressure others to do.

O’Malley said: The bishops must not appear to be picking on one political party.

It’s as if Cupich said, “Yeah, killing babies is wrong, but what about those young people who can’t find jobs? We need to think about them!”

Very, very disappointed, but not surprised. The muted humanity indeed! What a nice way to distance himself and his listeners from the horror.

That’s true. He talks about the “muted humanity,” and then demonstrates that that’s EXACTLY how he thinks of the unborn.

He’s just a lefty political activist, posing as a bishop, toadying to the Pope. Look at how Wuerl, Dolan, O’Malley, and others have turned hard to the left since Francis came in.

With Francis, the thugs who made Benedict’s life impossible are now running the Vatican. One can only hope and pray that the thuggery has become so bad that the pendulum at the next Conclave will swing HARD in the other direction.

I just keep thinking: Balcony. Doors open. BURKE!

Cupich is an equivocator. The same sort of prelate who tried to turn Nazism in the direction of Christianity.

So why doesn’t Benedict speak up? All I have seen is Benedict agreeing with Francis. I have yet to see anything that tells me that Benedict is anything but happy with retiring and giving Francis his seat.

Maybe BXVI was “pressured” to leave, and if so, that would explain why he’s not speaking up.

Maybe so, but he has a responsibility to speak up(that is if he truly believes Francis is doing harm).

Benedict has criticism, which he has voiced to Francis, but only when he is asked for his opinion.

Benedict reportedly planned to become Cardinal Ratzinger once again. One or two Popes had done the same thing when they resigned.

The only other times in history when there have been “two Popes,” the reason was that there was a schism. Thus, Benedict is not going to do or say anything that would even suggest that he is speaking with the authority of a “Pope.”

I think it was a grave mistake for Benedict to remain “Pope” at all—even as “Pope Emeritus.”

No one said he had to say anything as "with the authority of the pope". He should be saying something however if he truly believes that Francis is wrong and causing havoc. But then again, there aren't any Catholic bishops willing to do this. This leads me to believe that no one really thinks so.

It is known that Benedict has written messages to Francis, when asked for his opinion. The content has been kept in the strictest confidence. At least, strict enough that it hasn’t been shared with ME!

There is nothing that the faithful can do except not participate in the madness, and do all we can to undermine the Pope’s credibility in those matters where he has no authority to teach, and particularly where he is promoting hoaxes—such as socialism and global warming.

Not likely, considering the vast quantity of hand-picked rotten fruit he has been systematically depositing in powerful positions.

Only the Cardinals participate in a Conclave.

“...Ignoring cardinalatial sees also greatly strengthens the power of the pope because he can ignore the appointees of his predecessor instead of simply ratifying decisions made when prelates were appointed to cardinalatial sees. The pope will be able to reshape the college in his own image much faster than in the past...”

Yes. A good explanation for why he would appoint so many Cardinals in non-cardinalatial sees.

Francis was put in office by the same people who drove Benedict out. They are thugs with plans within plans, accumulated in their top desk drawers for years. Just as Obamacare and most of Obama’s agenda were all ready for decades. (All the “listening sessions” are a sham.)

I followed the latest round of new Cardinals. Virtually all of them were of the quality of the one in Fiji, described to me by a friend in Australia as “that asshole.”

McElroy and Cupich are typical Francis appointments.

The skulduggery brings "Windswept House" to mind.
