When Massachusetts demanded that Catholics must allow gays to adopt, the Catholic Church should have threatened and prepared to shut down every Catholic institution in the state and country: every hospital, school, college, food bank, athletic league, everything.

The impact would have been huge and immediate. But, no, they let themselves be co-opted and marginalized.
