11 Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. 12 When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear. 13 But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John. 14 He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth, 15 for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born. 16 He will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God. 17 And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

18 Zechariah asked the angel, “How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.”

19 The angel said to him, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news. 20 And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their appointed time.”

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Zechariah is doing the totally proper religious thing, as he goes into the Inner Sanctum to burn incense before the Lord. He is a Priest, and obviously believes the Word of God, and has lived a righteous, decent life with his wife Elizabeth. Yet, when an actual Angel appears to him, he is so incredulous that he applies the normal laws of science to his situation and reacts with disbelief!

Since the earliest times, highly intelligent and religious people have drawn the line at miracles. Even though they believe the Word of God, and practice their faith, and may even have a worldwide ministry, they assert that the death of the last Apostle signaled the end of the miraculous.

This was also the situation in Zechariah's time. The last officially recognized Prophet of God had died 400 years earlier, and the hardship and misery of the intervening years of subjugation to world empires had caused the love of many to grow cold. One can not really blame Zechariah for reacting to this awesome news this way. However, he is struck with silence for nine whole months.

Yesterday, when Bibi addressed the UN and defended the Jews against the entire world, there was silence for 45 seconds. I think the world may have gotten off easy this time.

When the Lamb broke the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. I often ponder this...can you imagine this intense moment when even the angels that speak HOLY HOLY HOLY remain silent. If only the world would understand both the MERCY and JUSTICE of GOD...It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. Praying for the Peace of Jerusalem, for the Salvation of all Israel, for the Salvation of all our loved ones and friends, for our persecuted and martyred even this day, and for the nations who live in darkness. BLESSED be the LAMB OF GOD who takes away the sins of the world. Amen.
