Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Character Studies From The Bible

John the Baptist

3 In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea 2 and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” 3 This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah:

“A voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
    make straight paths for him.’”[a]

4 John’s clothes were made of camel’s hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. 5 People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan. 6 Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.

(Matthew 3)

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The area around the Jordan is extremely rugged country. I remember bumping along in a tour bus, doing hairpin turns through dry, jagged mountains that came right up to the windows on one side, with a sheer drop on the other. It was in that area I learned the true meaning of the word "Oasis".

As we know from earlier reading, John was six months older than his Cousin Jesus, and Jesus began His ministry at about the age of 30. Scripture does not indicate at what age John began to preach, but from the Passage, it can be inferred that he had been in the desert a while, fasting, praying, and seeking revelation from God. He must have been a sight! Yet, even though he may have come across as a crazy, half-starved fanatic, people were drawn to him and his message. He was beginning to draw a crowd and attract the attention of the "Powers That Be".

Since the New Testament is in Greek (The commercial language of the day), we get the word "Baptize" from that language. What John was actually doing, though, was the Jewish practice of the "Mikvah" which symbolizes cleansing, renewal, and purification. It was a perfectly acceptable practice at the time and still is. Both John's Message and his Practice were rooted in the Hebrew Scriptures.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR
THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM!
And for the Preservation of the Valiant
Israeli Nation!

"St. John The Baptist"
El Greco - c. 1603

_ those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,

And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven
is at hand.

For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make
his paths straight.
And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.

Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan,

And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.

We pray in particular on behalf of our brothers and sisters in Syria, Iraq, Egypt, Libya and throughout the Mideast. The members of the oldest of our Christian Communities, some of which date from the days of the Apostles, suffer under cruel, merciless and unrelenting persecution. They are Orthodox and Catholic, Protestant and Evangelical, Coptic, Pentecostal, and Baptist. To the persecutors, we are all "Nazarenes."
