Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Character Studies From The Bible

Nehemiah

1 The words of Nehemiah son of Hakaliah:

In the month of Kislev in the twentieth year, while I was in the citadel of Susa, 2 Hanani, one of my brothers, came from Judah with some other men, and I questioned them about the Jewish remnant that had survived the exile, and also about Jerusalem.

3 They said to me, “Those who survived the exile and are back in the province are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire.”

4 When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven. 5 Then I said:

“Lord, the God of heaven,
the great and awesome God,
who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and keep his commandments,
6 let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer your servant is praying before you day and night for your servants,
the people of Israel.
I confess the sins we Israelites,
including myself and my father’s family,
have committed against you.
7 We have acted very wickedly toward you.
We have not obeyed the commands, decrees and laws you gave your servant Moses.

8 “Remember the instruction you gave your servant Moses,
saying, ‘If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the nations,
9 but if you return to me and obey my commands
, then even if your exiled people are at the farthest horizon,
I will gather them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for my Name.’

10 “They are your servants and your people,
whom you redeemed by your great strength and your mighty hand.
11 Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of this your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight in revering your name.
Give your servant success today by granting him favor in the presence of this man.”

I was cupbearer to the king.

(Nehemiah 1)

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Today we start a new character study, from the "Historic Books" of the Old Testament, of a man named Nehemiah. The story open with Nehemiah receiving word from a friend that the present state of Jerusalem is a burnt heap of rubble, inhabited by sad, sick, and miserable people. Although Nehemiah has been away from home a very long time, this news distresses him greatly, and he immediately turns to God in prayer. Prayer is Nehemiah's FIRST action, not his "Last Resort".

Nehemiah's Prayer is a wonderful model for us when we just don't know what to pray! It is similar in structure to Jesus's "Our Father" Prayer that He taught His Disciples. Let us look at it, and see how we can discern Nehemiah's character from how he addresses his Lord.

“Lord, the God of heaven,
the great and awesome God,
who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and keep his commandments,
6 let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer your servant is praying before you day and night for your servants,
the people of Israel.

Notice that Nehemiah begins his prayer with worship and awe, as he approaches the Throne of Grace. This is the same type of opening that we perceive in: "Our Father, Who art in Heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom Come, Thy will be done, one earth as it is in heaven".

Nehemiah goes a little further to "remind" God of His Covenant with the people of Israel, (as if God needs reminding). However, it is not presumptuous for Nehemiah to do this, as he is merely repeating the Holy Scriptures back to God.

Next, Nehemiah confesses his sins and the sins of his people. He is acting as an intercessor, but can only do so after he confesses his own sin.

I confess the sins we Israelites,
including myself and my father’s family,
have committed against you.
7 We have acted very wickedly toward you.
We have not obeyed the commands, decrees and laws you gave your servant Moses.

This is again similar to the Lord's prayer, but Jesus attaches forgiveness to our forgiving of others' sins against ourselves.

Next, Nehemiah reviews the Promises of God, intertwined with the history of his People.

8 “Remember the instruction you gave your servant Moses,
saying, ‘If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the nations,
9 but if you return to me and obey my commands,
then even if your exiled people are at the farthest horizon,
I will gather them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for my Name.’

Nehemiah concludes his prayer with his actual petition, which was to be granted favor by the King of Persia to go to Jerusalem and check things out for himself. Perhaps he could do something to help. In any case, although Nehemiah had a trusted position in the king's service, he faced the same possibility that faced Queen Esther. He could be struck down dead for bothering the king with his personal request.

Tomorrow, we will talk about Nehemiah's "job", and what it entailed.

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR
THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM!
And for the Preservation of the Valiant
Israeli Nation!

"The Cure of Nehemiah"
Stained Glass – 14th Century
Marienkirche Frankfurt an der Oder

_ HE words of Nehemiah the son of Hachaliah. And it came to pass in the month Chisleu, in the twentieth year, as I was in Shushan the palace,

That Hanani, one of my brethren, came, he and certain men of Judah; and I asked them concerning the Jews that had escaped, which were left of the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem.
And they said unto me, The remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach: the wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and the gates thereof are burned with fire.

And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven,

And said, I beseech thee, O LORD God of heaven, the great and terrible God, that keepeth covenant and mercy for them that love him and observe his commandments:

Let thine ear now be attentive, and thine eyes open, that thou mayest hear the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee now, day and night, for the children of Israel thy servants, and confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have sinned against thee: both I and my father's house have sinned.

We have dealt very corruptly against thee, and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the judgments, which thou commandedst thy servant Moses.

Remember, I beseech thee, the word that thou commandedst thy servant Moses, saying, If ye transgress, I will scatter you abroad among the nations:

But if ye turn unto me, and keep my commandments, and do them; though there were of you cast out unto the uttermost part of the heaven, yet will I gather them from thence, and will bring them unto the place that I have chosen to set my name there.

Now these are thy servants and thy people, whom thou hast redeemed by thy great power, and by thy strong hand.

O LORD, I beseech thee, let now thine ear be attentive to the prayer of thy servant, and to the prayer of thy servants, who desire to fear thy name: and prosper, I pray thee, thy servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man. For I was the king's cupbearer.

This is the way you shall bless the Israelites. Say to them, The Lord bless you and watch, guard, and keep you; The Lord make His face to shine upon and enlighten you and be gracious (kind, merciful, and giving favor) to you; The Lord lift up His [approving] countenance upon you and give you peace (tranquility of heart and life continually).

And they shall put My name upon the Israelites, and I will bless them. (Numbers 6:23-27 AMP)
