Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem
Character Studies From The Bible
Peter
(The Gospel According to Matthew)
13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, Who do people say the Son of Man is?
14 They replied, Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.
15 But what about you? he asked. Who do you say I am?
16 Simon Peter answered, You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.
17 Jesus replied, Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you that you are Peter,[b] and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades[c] will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be[d] bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be[e] loosed in heaven. 20 Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.
(Matthew 16)

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem
The location of this incident, Caesarea Philippi, is located in the extreme north of modern Israel, near the Lebanon Border. It is considered a sacred spot by several religions, most notably the Druze People. It is one of the sources of the Jordan River, and features a lovely fresh-water spring. It is a place where Christians of all denominations love to visit and recall the event depicted in today's Reading.
Christians disagree on the meaning of Peter and "The Keys to the Kingdom", and it is amply discussed in the Religion Forum, but all can agree on one thing: Peter did not "figure out for himself" that Jesus is the Messiah. This was not a feat of human intellect, deductive reasoning, or even emotional conclusions based upon observation. Jesus tells him flat-out that Peter's Statement of Faith is the direct result of Divine Revelation, and a Gift from God.
We shall see tomorrow, that almost immediately, Peter will switch back to his own reasoning and he gets himself into big trouble!

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM! And for the Preservation of the Valiant Israeli Nation!

HEN Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? |
And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.
He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?
And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
Then charged he his disciples that they should tell no man that he was Jesus the Christ.

They are Orthodox and Catholic, Protestant and Evangelical, Coptic, Pentecostal, and Baptist. To the persecutors, we are all "Nazarenes."
