Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Character Studies From The Bible

Peter

(The Acts of the Apostles)

(Acts 4)

4 The priests and the captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to Peter and John while they were speaking to the people. 2 They were greatly disturbed because the apostles were teaching the people, proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead. 3 They seized Peter and John and, because it was evening, they put them in jail until the next day. 4 But many who heard the message believed; so the number of men who believed grew to about five thousand.

5 The next day the rulers, the elders and the teachers of the law met in Jerusalem. 6 Annas the high priest was there, and so were Caiaphas, John, Alexander and others of the high priest’s family. 7 They had Peter and John brought before them and began to question them: “By what power or what name did you do this?”

8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: “Rulers and elders of the people! 9 If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was lame and are being asked how he was healed, 10 then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. 11 Jesus is

“‘the stone you builders rejected,
    which has become the cornerstone.’[a]

12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”

13 When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus. 14 But since they could see the man who had been healed standing there with them, there was nothing they could say. 15 So they ordered them to withdraw from the Sanhedrin and then conferred together. 16 “What are we going to do with these men?” they asked. “Everyone living in Jerusalem knows they have performed a notable sign, and we cannot deny it. 17 But to stop this thing from spreading any further among the people, we must warn them to speak no longer to anyone in this name.”

18 Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. 19 But Peter and John replied, “Which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to him? You be the judges! 20 As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.”

21 After further threats they let them go. They could not decide how to punish them, because all the people were praising God for what had happened. 22 For the man who was miraculously healed was over forty years old.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Before the War, Oskar Schindler was an avid motorcyclist. He enjoyed the racing circuit in Europe, and liked to tinker with bikes in his garage. Of course, the rise of the Nazis changed all that, and Oskar found himself managing a factory that produced metal mess-kits and accoutrements for the war effort. Oskar's "employees" were Jews, rounded up for slave labor by the evil regime.

A transformation came over Oskar during this time, and he began to rescue his workers by making fake papers and arrangements for their escape. The story was chronicled in Thomas Kenneally's book and Steven Spielberg's movie "Schindler's List".

Kenneally's book tells of an incident that the movie ignored, so I will share it here.

In the waning days of the War, the Nazis were trying to hide the evidence of their atrocities by slaughtering their prisoners and covering up. A group of SS on motorcycles pulled up to Schindler's factory to do this. With more than a hundred Jewish People just behind the wall, Oskar engaged the SS in what we bikers call "scooter-talk", chatting about their bikes, telling stories, and comparing notes. After giving the SS fresh food and petrol, they were on their way, and "Schindler's Jews" were able to breathe a collective sigh of relief.

We may think that the Apostles in the Book of Acts were in a unique situation, as their Faith was considered against the law. In our modern society, we don't ever expect our religion to come into conflict with the Law of the Land. Good people raised in a Judeo-Christian environment don't have to worry...or do we?

Peter was being faced with a real dilemma. He loved his people and his nation, and had profound respect for the rulers of his religion, but he had to stand for Truth, no matter what.

And we know, that the day of Pentecost and the infilling of the Holy Spirit was what changed him.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

Loved Schindler’s List. And you’re right, there are so many other stories in the book. Enough to make a couple more movies.

Joining in prayer, left that other site, for Israel, our beloved America, and all God’s people.

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR
THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM!
And for the Preservation of the Valiant
Israeli Nation!

"Apostles Peter and John"
Pieter Aertsen (1575)

_ ND as they spake unto the people, the priests, and the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees, came upon them,

Being grieved that they taught the people, and preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead.

And they laid hands on them, and put them in hold unto the next day: for it was now eventide.
Howbeit many of them which heard the word believed; and the number of the men was about five thousand.

And it came to pass on the morrow, that their rulers, and elders, and scribes,

And Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the kindred of the high priest, were gathered together at Jerusalem.

And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, By what power, or by what name, have ye done this?

Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel,

If we this day be examined of the good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he is made whole;

Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.

This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner.

Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.

And beholding the man which was healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it.

But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves,

Saying, What shall we do to these men? for that indeed a notable miracle hath been done by them is manifest to all them that dwell in Jerusalem; and we cannot deny it.

But that it spread no further among the people, let us straitly threaten them, that they speak henceforth to no man in this name.

And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus.

But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye.

For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.

So when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding nothing how they might punish them, because of the people: for all men glorified God for that which was done.

For the man was above forty years old, on whom this miracle of healing was shewed.
