Facing east like the Muslims? Might as well since Pope Francis says Catholics and Muslims worship the same God...Allah. Glad us Christians worship the God of the Bible.

No, facing the altar.

Matthew 24:27 (Douay-Rheims) For as lightning cometh out of the east, and appeareth even into the west: so shall the coming of the Son of man be.

This would be a return to something done in Christian Churches before Mohammad's grandfather had herded a single goat (or whatever he did).

Priest and faithful petitioning and praying together to God in the same direction from which Our Lord promised he would come again.

Muslims in Indonesia and and Pakistan, incidentally do not face east, since Mecca is in what is now Saudi Arabia.

Muslims face toward Mecca, which is east in some places, west in others, south in others, etc.

Catholics ought to face "liturgical east," which means that the priest and people face the same direction, toward the altar (whatever compass direction that happens to be) ... making it crystal clear that they're both praying to God, and not worshipping each other.

Facing east like the Muslims?

This is a thread about Catholic liturgical practice. The phrase "facing east" is a vernacular rendition of the Latin "ad orientam", which has substantial theological underpinnings to do with the nature of the Mass in its essential sacrificial aspect and the role of the Catholic priest in it.

To quote St. Augustine: "When we rise to pray, we turn East, where heaven begins. And we do this not because God is there, as if He had moved away from the other directions on earth..., but rather to help us remember to turn our mind towards a higher order, that is, to God.". As another poster has previously pointed out, this is based on a passage in Matthew's Gospel.

Islam is a hybrid of teachings and practices taken from both Judaism and Christianity which predate it (as well as pagan novelties), so the fact that some Muslims on earth face east (towards Mecca) is entirely irrelevant to the subject. Muslims say God is merciful, too. Does that mean that invoking the mercy of God means we're closet Muslims?

Why even barge into a thread devoted to Catholic worship? Don't you have a rapture to catch, or something?

1) Facing “east”—i.e., liturgical east—is a Christian tradition that goes back as far as any liturgical tradition.

2) Muslims do not face east—they face MECCA.

No, facing east toward the sunrise — because that’s when the Resurrection supposedly happened.
