Andy Stanley and the “NEW Hermeneutic”

Andy Stanley and the “NEW Hermeneutic”

Stanley has not dealt persuasively with the so-called obstacle of “The Bible says.” He has only moved the authority for belief to autonomous reason. One wonders, then, what kind of belief Stanley is advocating. There is natural belief in “every drop of rain that falls.” But then there is saving faith, which is the gift of God. This “faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17). Minus the Word of God, Stanley re-presents Thomistic dualism for modern evangelical use: belief is the product of rational process beginning in disbelief.

His Father is probably disappointed but he has had Andy preach at First Baptist several times.

That’s why I subscribe to this:

“The authority of the Holy Scripture, for which it ought to be believed, and obeyed, depends not upon the testimony of any man, or Church; but wholly upon God (who is truth itself) the author thereof: and therefore it is to be received, because it is the Word of God.”

and this:

“Although the light of nature, and the works of creation and providence do so far manifest the goodness, wisdom, and power of God, as to leave men unexcusable; yet are they not sufficient to give that knowledge of God, and of His will, which is necessary unto salvation. Therefore it pleased the Lord, at sundry times, and in divers manners, to reveal Himself, and to declare that His will unto His Church; and afterwards for the better preserving and propagating of the truth, and for the more sure establishment and comfort of the Church against the corruption of the flesh, and the malice of Satan and of the world, to commit the same wholly unto writing”

Some Christians believe in ONLY the Bible and have no time or patience with “Apostolic Tradition.” Way too “Catholic,” I guess.

“Apostolic Tradition” is too fluid, too frail, too flawed, too immature, too non-divine, too subjective, too impotent, too human-breathed, too Zeitgeististical, too non-authoritative, too scribal, too opinionistical, too nominal, too temporal, and too incomplete.

Hi. Although I value the Westminster Confession, from which you quoted, as someone who got saved out of Romanism, I consider it to be secondary to the God Breathed Writings of the Bible Scriptures.

2 Tim 3:16 ((Youngs Literal Translation)
“every Writing [is] God-breathed, and profitable for teaching, for conviction, for setting aright, for instruction that [is] in righteousness”

When I got saved, I was ready to feed on the Word, and I still won’t use the WCF ( Westminster Confession) as a source of authority.

Andy Stanley is the latest Megamall boy wonder - they pop up like boy band haircuts, whether it’s Osteen, Furtick, Lenz (sp?), etc.

Read the Apostolic Fathers (early-middle 2nd century) to see what a hodgepodge of expressions of Christianity existed as of the turn of the first century. No question their faith in God saved them, but it was obvious that the traditions of the Apostles needed to be organized, in order for future generations to have a true knowledge of Jesus Christ, who is the ultimate authority.

Beyond a true knowledge of Jesus Christ, as he is presented in the memoirs of the Apostles, the Bible, I’m not sure that other *binding* traditions are necessary.

Lol. And YOU know more than the 2000-year-old Catholic Church. Now that is some ego.

I stand by what I wrote.

After I got saved, I had MANY RC “priests” tell me I had to go read the ECF to get the real teachings.

They wouldn’t point to the Word, but it’s the Word that saves:

“Being BORN AGAIN

not of corruptible seed,

but incorruptible,

by the WORD of God

who liveth and remaineth for ever.”
