I agree. In 1987, when I told a Presbyterian friend of mine that a few Lutheran groups would merge and form the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, he said, “I’m surprised ‘evangelical’ is in the name. I never heard of any Lutherans going door-to-door, to talk about their church.” I said that I was surprised by the name, too.

There are many (now) ELCA congregations founded in the early 20th century which have "Evangelical" in their legal name.

One reason may be that in Germany the Lutherans are called the Evangelichekirche
