Vatican, Al-Azhar to Officially Resume Dialogue

Vatican City, Oct 21, 2016 / 06:17 am (CNA/EWTN News).- On Friday, the Vatican announced it will be sending a representative to Egypt to set plans for the official re-launching of dialogue between the Holy See and the Al-Azhar Mosque and adjunct University, marking a seismic step in Catholic-Muslim relations.

In an Oct. 21 communique, the Vatican said the secretary of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, Bishop Miguel Ángel Ayuso Guixot, will be heading back to Cairo for an Oct. 23 meeting with a delegation from Al-Azhar.

He will be accompanied by Msgr. Khaled Akasheh, head of the council’s Office for Islam; Bishop Emmanuel Ayad Bishop of Luxor, Egypt; Professor Joseph Maila, an expert in Islamic Studies and Fr. Jean Druel, O.P., Director of the Dominican Institute of Oriental Studies.

According to the communique, the meeting in Cairo is to prepare for an encounter that will take place in Rome, “probably toward the end of April 2017, and which marks the official resumption of dialogue between the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue and Al-Azhar.”

The visit to Cairo will also serve as an opportunity to evaluate, together with Archbishop Bruno Musarò, nuncio to Egypt, and the Deputy of the Great Imam of Al-Azhar, Sheik Abbas Shouman, “the possibility to promote concrete initiatives for peace.”

Bishop Ayuso made a similar visit to Al-Azhar in July, where he met with Sunni academic and politician Mahmoud Hamdi Zakzouk that to discuss the formal resumption of dialogue between the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue and Al-Azhar University. The current Oct. 23 meeting, then, can be seen as a fruit of that encounter.

The Vatican afraid? Not a chance.
They spent 2000 years fighting heresies, the Medicis, Holy Wars...you name it. If you really think that the Catholic Church is "in trouble" because of a bunch of outlaw, lowlife Muslims then you simply do not know the Church.

Also, there is no world head of Islam. They have no "pope" like we have, no leader. These men are all free roamers who don't follow ANY laws, rules or faiths.

European politicians including Italy’s (and the new Pope) .... all are welcoming millions of Moslem fighting-age men (90 percent is the reported figure)... a full scale invastion of Italy and much of Europe

I think the Vatican must be as afraid as much of the rest of people in Europe are

and the Vatican knows its history...almost being conquered over centuries of Moslem invasions of Europe.... history is repeating itself, imho

that is why I am so concerned
those are basic facts not paranoia
I pray you are right but it does not appear so. sorry to have to say.

The "Vatican" isn't a person. It's the Holy See, the central governing body of the Catholic Church. It is a sovereign entity recognized by international law, consisting of the Pope and the Roman Curia.
There is Vatican City, built on Vatican Hill, which was always the name of that hill, one of SEVERAL in Rome. So, it's NOT "the Vatican" but an immense institution founded 2000 years ago.

From Google:
Vatican City, officially Vatican City State or the State of Vatican City, is a walled enclave within the city of Rome. With an area of approximately 44 hectares (110 acres), and a population of 842. It is the smallest sovereign state in the world by both area and population.

In Roman Catholicism, a curia consists of a group of officials who assist in the governance of a particular Church.

These curias range from the relatively simple

1. diocesan curia, Every diocese and eparchy has a curia, consisting of the chief officials of the diocese. These officials assist the diocesan bishop in governing the particular church.
This diocesan curia includes the vicar general, who is normally also the moderator of the curia, any episcopal vicars, the chancellor of the curia, vice-chancellors and notaries, and a finance officer and financial council. The bishop may also add other officials of his choice.

2. patriarchal curias, Patriarchates and Major Archiepiscopates of the Eastern Catholic Churches have an assembly called the Patriarchal Curia, which assists the patriarch or major archbishop in administering the sui juris church. The patriarchal curia is distinct from the diocesan or eparchal curia of the patriarch or major archbishop's diocese or eparchy.
The patriarchal curia consists of the permanent synod of the Church, the chancellor, assistant chancellor, and notaries, the patriarchal finance officer, the patriarchal liturgical commission and other patriarchal commissions, and the patriarchal tribunal. Up to three bishops may be elected specifically to serve in the patriarchal curia.

3. Roman Curia, which is the central government of the Catholic Church. It is the administrative unit of the Holy See, which assists the Pope in governing the Catholic Church.
The Roman Curia includes the Secretariats, the Curial Congregations, the Pontifical Councils, Pontifical Commissions, the tribunals, and other offices.

Other Roman Catholic bodies, such as religious institutes, may also have curias. For example, the Legion of Mary has a rank called the Curia. It stands above the Praesidium but below the Regia. The Curia is responsible for several Praesidia.
========================================

These curias are historically descended from the Roman Curiae, and they keep that name even though they now have very different functions.

When the Roman Empire collapsed, many of the administrative functions previously done by the state were subsumed by the only solid institution left, which was The Church.
The Bishop and curia took the place of the government officials, often to the point of actually sitting at the same chair in the same building. The Curia therefore passed into religious hands, and afterwards changed functions many times but always keeping its traditional name, at least in those Christian denominations that keep a strong continuity with the Apostolic tradition.
End of Google

========================================

Have you ever been there? The area outside of St. Peter's Basilica holds 100,000 people. There are guards at the front doors who tell people to cover their legs if they are wearing shorts and to cover their shoulders if they are shirtless or have the little straps on sundresses.
RESPECT is expected.

It's free to all humanity. This tiny state, the Vatican, smack in the middle of Rome, has MILLIONS of visitors every year.

The famous "La Pieta" was sculpted by Michelangelo. My father saw it right after WWII and he said it was SO REAL looking that he HAD to touch it.
Now it's under unbreakable glass.

St. Peter's Basilica has the names of ALL the legal popes over the last two thousand years and yes, PETER was the first.
Those names ARE engraved in granite.

There are Catholic masses going on ALL DAY LONG in the various chapels inside the Basilica. And they are going on in several different languages.

There are also two DOZEN confessionals where Catholics can go to confession. Above the confessional are the languages that that particular priest speaks. The one I entered had a priest who spoke English, Chinese and Spanish. All were different.

The building inside is, needless to say, a Church that celebrates the glory of God. Next to it is the Sistine Chapel whose ceiling was painted by Michelangelo. Charlton Heston played Michelangelo in a movie eons ago.

I discovered that many non-Catholic Christians DON'T believe that St. Peter was crucified upside down in the site of Vatican Hill, NOW the Vatican, because it isn't written in the Bible. I can only assume that they don't believe in ANY Christian/Catholic history unless it's "written in the Bible."
I don't argue with that kind of ignorance.

Now, faithhopecharity, do you still insist that "the Vatican" is afraid?

Do you want to see an IMMENSE web site? Go to

BY THE WAY:

Al-Azhar Mosque (Arabic: الجامع الأزهر‎‎ ) means: "mosque of the most resplendent" and it's in Cairo, Egypt. The Egyptians call their own country "MISR." "Egypt" is what WE say.

When my husband and I lived in the middle east we visited Egypt TWICE. They are abysmally poor but happy and they liked Americans.
They are SO poor that many of them lived in the cemeteries there where the tombs are grander than any of THEIR shacks.

The traffic is horrific, just horrific.

One Christmas there my mother and I went to midnight Mass at St. Joseph's Church. My husband stayed at the hotel and watched "Miracle on 34th Street."
The taxi we hired to TAKE us to Mass WAITED until midnight Mass was over, at 2:00 A.M., to take us back to our hotel.

Yes. Thanks. (. “Vatican” meaning its ruling hierarchy just like “washDC” meaning those ruling the (fed) govt there. It’s just shorthand is all. Best,

So, do you still think that the IMMENSE institution in the Vatican is "afraid"? Washington D.C. has existed for only 230 years or so and the "Vatican" has existed 2000 years or so.

Lol. You just don't get it. The leadership of an ENTIRE faith of 2000 years "afraid" of ANYTHING? Absurd.
This "Vatican" institution, the Catholic Church, was founded by Jesus. There are 1.2 BILLION members.
'Nuff said.
