Good policy in general, but recognize that all of the italicized words are deliberate doctrinal corruption, and must be ignored in most cases.
This is especially true in the new testament writings.

So then you go to Mark 9:29 in the New International Version and it says:
29 He replied, “This kind can come out only by prayer.[a]”

This spirit was deaf, so it could not hear the disciples tell it to leave.

St Augustine, btw, reported that he had the same thing happen to him, with a bible opening to a page that answered one of his questions when he first became a Christian. The Lord has the right to communicate with us however He sees wants.
I don’t think it’s wrong to like the Catholic Jerusalem Bible? It’s wonderful, don’t put false guilt on yourself for no reason. If you are really concerned about the meaning, check it against the KJV. Bless you.

The word “fasting” isn’t in the Greek text. It is added by some translators.
These passages aren’t about fasting. They contain the Lord’s explanation of why his disciples could not expel a spirit.
The point is: anyone involved in spiritual warfare may need to know that a deaf spirit can only be expelled by prayer.

Prayer is the most potent spiritual procedure. Fasting may help as preparation for prayer, but there isn’t always time for it.
I have experienced cases where verbally commanding a spirit to leave didn’t work, but it was expelled by prayer.
I’m not sure why you are mincing words, but what is the difference between commanding a spirit to leave in the name of Jesus (which is the only authority by which you could do so) — or a prayer?
I’m sure the Lord knew what He was saying when He instructed the disciples that they needed to fast and pray for the spirit to leave. Why is this an issue for you?

These modern translations omitting fasting insulate demonic forces that cannot be defeated.
KJVO is easier than actually learning about textual transmission.
Commanding a spirit to leave in the name of Jesus is communication with that spirit. Prayer is communication with God.
This isn’t an issue for me.
I think you mistake “supplication” for prayer there; but as long as you do the Lord’s work, I’m good.

But while candour obliges me to acknowledge that I cannot account for the fact here alleged, that a certain class or genus of demons cannot be expelled but by prayer and fasting, while others may be ejected without them, I can give a sense to the passage which all my readers will easily understand: viz. that there are certain evil propensities, in some persons, which pampering the flesh tends to nourish and strengthen; and that self-denial and fasting, accompanied by prayer to God, are the most likely means, not only to mortify such propensities, but also to destroy them. A dumb spirit - That is, a demon who afflicted those in whom it dwelt with an incapacity of speaking. The spirit itself could not be either deaf or dumb. These are accidents that belong only to organized animate bodies.
So Clarke backs up the original text reading that fasting is required with prayer because it mortifies the flesh and therefore gives a certain authority over the demonic realm.
Any thinking Pentecostal or intellectual Charismatic knows this. I was unaware of the issue before I posted the article, quite frankly.

I’m not sure about your 1880 date, but the Bible interprets itself and the Greek for “fasting” here is as a religious exercise, not just abstaining from food for the physical benefits of fasting.
Jesus was himself fasting for forty days in the desert, when He had victory over Satan; so this is most likely why He was emphatic that “this kind (of satanic entity) comes out only by prayer and fasting”...
It is all in the same way He pulled down “strongholds” or lies and accusations of Satan’s misuse of scripture in the temptation in the desert.
