But mercy and compassion cannot be separated from truth and remain legitimate virtues. The Church cannot contradict or circumvent Scripture and her own magisterium without invalidating her mission.

The words of Jesus himself are very direct and radical on the matter of divorce.

“Because of your hardness of heart, He wrote you this commandment. Moses permitted you to divorce your wives; but from the beginning it has not been so. And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery “
