I have the impression that Williams was the standard sort of left-wing flake that the English-speaking world has been putting in positions of power for the last thirty years or so, on the theory that having established cultural foundations is boring, and that the condition of strength and stability unfairly deprives up-and-coming writers of drama that can be turned to advantage as they climb their career ladders.
