I was under the impression a “Cause for Canonization” was opened only after a claim of a miracle through the intercession of someone.

I was under the impression a Cause for Canonization was opened only after a claim of a miracle through the intercession of someone. No, it's opened usually with what is like a thesis about the life of the person to convince the Vatican to open the cause. No miracle need occur yet.
