Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Isaiah

Isaiah 23

A Prophecy Against Tyre

23 A prophecy against Tyre:

Wail, you ships of Tarshish!
    For Tyre is destroyed
    and left without house or harbor.
From the land of Cyprus
    word has come to them.

2 Be silent, you people of the island
    and you merchants of Sidon,
    whom the seafarers have enriched.
3 On the great waters
    came the grain of the Shihor;
the harvest of the Nile[a] was the revenue of Tyre,
    and she became the marketplace of the nations.

4 Be ashamed, Sidon, and you fortress of the sea,
    for the sea has spoken:
“I have neither been in labor nor given birth;
    I have neither reared sons nor brought up daughters.”
5 When word comes to Egypt,
    they will be in anguish at the report from Tyre.

6 Cross over to Tarshish;
    wail, you people of the island.
7 Is this your city of revelry,
    the old, old city,
whose feet have taken her
    to settle in far-off lands?
8 Who planned this against Tyre,
    the bestower of crowns,
whose merchants are princes,
    whose traders are renowned in the earth?
9 The Lord Almighty planned it,
    to bring down her pride in all her splendor
    and to humble all who are renowned on the earth.

10 Till[b] your land as they do along the Nile,
    Daughter Tarshish,
    for you no longer have a harbor.
11 The Lord has stretched out his hand over the sea
    and made its kingdoms tremble.
He has given an order concerning Phoenicia
    that her fortresses be destroyed.
12 He said, “No more of your reveling,
    Virgin Daughter Sidon, now crushed!

“Up, cross over to Cyprus;
    even there you will find no rest.”
13 Look at the land of the Babylonians,[c]
    this people that is now of no account!
The Assyrians have made it
    a place for desert creatures;
they raised up their siege towers,
    they stripped its fortresses bare
    and turned it into a ruin.

14 Wail, you ships of Tarshish;
    your fortress is destroyed!

15 At that time Tyre will be forgotten for seventy years, the span of a king’s life. But at the end of these seventy years, it will happen to Tyre as in the song of the prostitute:

16 “Take up a harp, walk through the city,
    you forgotten prostitute;
play the harp well, sing many a song,
    so that you will be remembered.”

17 At the end of seventy years, the Lord will deal with Tyre. She will return to her lucrative prostitution and will ply her trade with all the kingdoms on the face of the earth. 18 Yet her profit and her earnings will be set apart for the Lord; they will not be stored up or hoarded. Her profits will go to those who live before the Lord, for abundant food and fine clothes.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Ruins of a pagan Temple in Sidon.

My best girlfriend from the 6th grade came from the area cited in this Chapter of Isaiah. Her family were very devout Christians, and claimed they could trace their Christianity to Apostolic Times. Sittoo (Grandma) once shared with me a story about what happened to her family way back in the 1940's. Her beloved first-born son went out one night to buy cigarettes. He NEVER returned. He just disappeared. Sittoo went to the Police and begged for help, but they refused to "interfere" with the activities of the Muslim gangs because they did not want to make trouble in the community. This incident occurred back when Lebanon had a Christian Majority, but were very accommodating to Muslims. They tried to include them in government and practiced toleration in business, politics, public policy and so on. The decades since that incident in Tyre have been years of bitter civil war, competing militias, kidnapping, bombings, and everything else the whole world is experiencing now. Beirut, once called "The Paris of the Mediterranean" has become a byword for destruction and desolation. Indeed, some are now calling Paris "The Beirut of France".

Tyre and Sidon were incredibly wealthy and beautiful seaport cities. Much like the Beirut of later times, they glittered with commerce, shipping, wealth, and sophistication. At one time friendly to Israel, Hiram, the King of Tyre actually helped supply Solomon with the materials needed to build the First Temple in Jerusalem. Great cedar beams were floated down the coast from this great city, and thousands of people came to work on the project. Solomon awarded whole cities to Hiram, and Hiram was annoyed that the cities weren't even big enough to pay for all the help he provided. (Perhaps that was the beginning of the "troubles!") In any case, Hiram and his people were not believers in the One true God, so their empire was built on shaky sand. Every conqueror of the Area eventually had a go at Tyre, from the Assyrian hoards, to Alexander the Great, to Napoleon. Jesus once took a L-O-N-G walk with His Disciples and visited there, so there is hope for that forsaken place, and there will always be a remnant. Sittoo has long since gone to be with the Lord, and I pray that she has finally been reunited with her son.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

God Bless America!

For a perfectly execrable pun that fits with today's message, scroll over the next few lines, which are in white font. By scrolling over them, the pun will appear.(If puns are not your thing, just ignore this comment! LOL.)
I never tire of Isaiah's Tirade about the Tyre Raid. But if both Tyre and Sidon had been on the side on which Isaiah relied on, things may have gone differently.

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR
THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM!
And for the Preservation of the Valiant
Israeli Nation!

HE burden of Tyre. Howl, ye ships of Tarshish; for
it is laid waste, so that there is no house, no entering in: from the land of Chittim it is revealed to them.

2 Be still, ye inhabitants of the isle; thou whom the merchants of Zidon, that pass over the sea, have replenished.
3 And by great waters the seed of Sihor, the harvest of the river, is her revenue; and she is a mart of nations.

4 Be thou ashamed, O Zidon: for the sea hath spoken, even the strength of the sea, saying, I travail not, nor bring forth children, neither do I nourish up young men, nor bring up virgins.

5 As at the report concerning Egypt, so shall they be sorely pained at the report of Tyre.

6 Pass ye over to Tarshish; howl, ye inhabitants of the isle.

7 Is this your joyous city, whose antiquity is of ancient days? her own feet shall carry her afar off to sojourn.

8 Who hath taken this counsel against Tyre, the crowning city, whose merchants are princes, whose traffickers are the honourable of the earth?

9 The LORD of hosts hath purposed it, to stain the pride of all glory, and to bring into contempt all the honourable of the earth.

10 Pass through thy land as a river, O daughter of Tarshish: there is no more strength.

11 He stretched out his hand over the sea, he shook the kingdoms: the LORD hath given a commandment against the merchant city, to destroy the strong holds thereof.

12 And he said, Thou shalt no more rejoice, O thou oppressed virgin, daughter of Zidon: arise, pass over to Chittim; there also shalt thou have no rest.

13 Behold the land of the Chaldeans; this people was not, till the Assyrian founded it for them that dwell in the wilderness: they set up the towers thereof, they raised up the palaces thereof; and he brought it to ruin.

14 Howl, ye ships of Tarshish: for your strength is laid waste.

15 And it shall come to pass in that day, that Tyre shall be forgotten seventy years, according to the days of one king: after the end of seventy years shall Tyre sing as an harlot.

16 Take an harp, go about the city, thou harlot that hast been forgotten; make sweet melody, sing many songs, that thou mayest be remembered.

17 And it shall come to pass after the end of seventy years, that the LORD will visit Tyre, and she shall turn to her hire, and shall commit fornication with all the kingdoms of the world upon the face of the earth.

18 And her merchandise and her hire shall be holiness to the LORD: it shall not be treasured nor laid up; for her merchandise shall be for them that dwell before the LORD, to eat sufficiently, and for durable clothing.

Similar story in my family - Christian-Moslem feud. Great uncle in the old Austria-Hungary empire broke curfew and stepped outside (most likely to relieve himself). Found his head on the doorstep the next day. Dad told me it was done by Turks.

By their fruits ye shall know them.

At least I give my grandparents credit for leaving and coming to America

Sittoo and her family came to the USA before 1952, because my friend was born the same year as I was, in the USA. The point is, of course, that the Christians are the REAL "refugees" from those countries, to this day.
