Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Isaiah

Isaiah 53

1 Who has believed our message

and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
2 He grew up before him like a tender shoot,
and like a root out of dry ground.
He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him,
nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.
3 He was despised and rejected by mankind,
a man of suffering, and familiar with pain.
Like one from whom people hide their faces
he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.

4 Surely he took up our pain
    and bore our suffering,
yet we considered him punished by God,
    stricken by him, and afflicted.
5 But he was pierced for our transgressions,
    he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed.
6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray,
    each of us has turned to our own way;
and the Lord has laid on him
    the iniquity of us all.

7 He was oppressed and afflicted,
    yet he did not open his mouth;
he was led like a lamb to the slaughter,
and as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
so he did not open his mouth.
8 By oppression[a] and judgment he was taken away.
Yet who of his generation protested?
For he was cut off from the land of the living;
for the transgression of my people he was punished.[b]
9 He was assigned a grave with the wicked,
and with the rich in his death,
though he had done no violence,
nor was any deceit in his mouth.

10 Yet it was the Lord’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer,
and though the Lord makes[c] his life an offering for sin,
he will see his offspring and prolong his days,
and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand.
11 After he has suffered,
    he will see the light of life[d] and be satisfied[e];
by his knowledge[f] my righteous servant will justify many,
and he will bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great,[g]
and he will divide the spoils with the strong,[h]
because he poured out his life unto death,
and was numbered with the transgressors.
For he bore the sin of many,
and made intercession for the transgressors.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Bless the LORD,
Oh My Soul,
And all that is within me Bless His Holy Name!
How Wonderful,
How Glorious,
How Excellent You Are,
Almighty,
Eternal and Omnipotent Father!
You Alone Are Worthy To Be Praised And Worshiped.

Father, We Thank You For Those who Continue to Support Israel,
despite the political Climate.
Number us NOT with those who whisper lies to Your People.
Those who say "Peace and Safety" out loud,
but who inwardly plot against You and Your Beloved!
We ask You to Intervene in the Affairs of the Nations,
And Guide the Direction of Our Own.
We Plead With You,
That Our President will be Led by Your Spirit
with regards to Our Own Country's Policies.

We Pray For The Swift and Sure Coming of Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Establish His Kingdom,
and Make All Things Right.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

There are so many quotes from Isaiah in Handel's "Messiah" that the Librettist Charles Jennens COULD have called his Work "Isaiah Said This", and probably no one would have argued with him. It is, however, one thing to QUOTE Isaiah, and quite another to BELIEVE him. That is where Faith comes in, and it is not something one can "cook up" oneself. This Famous segment of the "Servant Songs" opens with the question: "Who has believed our report?". Then it continues: "And to whom has the Arm of the LORD been revealed?".

This gives you a hint that what is to follow is so DIFFERENT, so OUTRAGEOUS, that one needs a special measure of Faith that comes as a revelation from GOD, to believe it.

It goes against everything we hold dear as good sense, justice, and proper etiquette that the innocent should NEVER take the punishment for the guilty. And yet this "Servant of the LORD" is described as being exactly that.

Remembering that the original Scriptures do not have chapter divisions, we remember that this is the Same Servant is the One Who will not snuff out a smoldering wick, the same One Who won't break a bent reed, the One Who is the Conqueror, the King, and The Redeemer, the One Whose Brings Good News.

"But", You may say, "This is such a violent chapter! WHERE is the Good News?"

It's in Verse 12:

12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great,
and he will divide the spoils with the strong, because he poured out his life unto death,
and was numbered with the transgressors.
For he bore the sin of many,
and made intercession for the transgressors.

Isaiah 53 is sung in Part 2 of Handel’s Messiah.

(It starts with “Behold The Lamb(John 1) but then launches into Isaiah 53 with “He was despised”.

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR
THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM!
And for the Preservation of the Valiant

The Academy Of St. Martin In The Fields
Sir Neville Marriner, Conductor

HO hath believed our report? and to
whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?

2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no
beauty that we should desire him.
3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.

8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.

9 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.

10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.

11 He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.

12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

My personal copy of Handel’s Messiah is the Pinnock Version. The tempo and arrangement seem different in this “Academy of St. Martin in the Fields” recording. Since Handel himself revised his production many times over the years, it is interesting to hear the different interpretations. Thanks for posting! :-)

Amen. Regarding yesterday's question, Paul quotes those scriptures in Romans 15: "19 [Even as my preaching has been accompanied] with the power of signs and wonders, [and all of it] by the power of the Holy Spirit. [The result is] that starting from Jerusalem and as far round as Illyricum, I have fully preached the Gospel [faithfully executing, accomplishing, carrying out to the full the good news] of Christ (the Messiah) in its entirety. 20 Thus my ambition has been to preach the Gospel, not where Christ’s name has already been known, lest I build on another man’s foundation; 21 But [instead I would act on the principle] as it is written, They shall see who have never been told of Him, and they shall understand who have never heard [of Him].
