Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Isaiah is treading upon delicate ground here. There is a little-repeated item in the Law of Moses that the "maimed" meaning a Eunuch, could not enter the Holy Temple. This horrible condition was the result of slavery, idolatry, and sin, as Pagan kings would castrate their slaves to keep them docile, protect their harems, and serve in the bureaucracy without hope of passing wealth down to their sons. Perhaps it was a hedge against corruption, but was a corrupt and evil practice in itself. There are quite a few stories of these unfortunate men in the Bible, and they are nearly always sympathetic. (The Books of Esther and Daniel immediately come to mind.)

In this amazing Chapter of the prophet Isaiah, the prophet groups eunuchs in with gentiles, as unfortunate people who have never heard the Word of God and were excluded from Salvation. Here, he speaks of a day when God's House will be a House of Prayer for ALL People, regardless of their ancestry or condition.

All Four of the Gospels tell the Story of the time when Jesus entered the Temple and saw Money-changers and Merchants operating in the courtyard. All four carry the description of Jesus making a whip out of cords and driving the scammers and cheaters out, tipping over their tables and quoting this very Chapter of Isaiah, with a little addition:

"And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves, And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves." — Matthew 21:12–13

Amen.

Thank You, Father, that You are at work to assure that at the name of Jesus every knee should (must) bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth. May there be an outpouring of Your Spirit in Israel that would bring multitudes to their knees on this side of Jesus’ return. Amen.
