Abu Dhabi's crown prince ordered the change to 'consolidate bonds of humanity between followers of different religions'
A mosque in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) capital, has been renamed Mary, Mother of Jesus.
Sheikh Mohammad bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, Abu Dhabi crown prince and deputy supreme commander of the UAE armed forces, ordered that the mosque be renamed to consolidate bonds of humanity between followers of different religions.
Mary plays a prominent role in the Christian and Islamic traditions.
Reverend Canon Andrew Thompson of St. Andrews Church, an Anglican parish near the newly renamed mosque, expressed is gratitude in an interview with Gulf News.
We are delighted that we are celebrating something that we have in common between both our faiths, he said.
Rev Thompson also said that Mary symbolises obedience to God in both faiths, and that he looked forward to growing in deeper understanding with members of the Islamic faith.
The move to rename the mosque which was formerly known as the Sheikh Mohammad bin Zayed Mosque reflects the UAEs efforts to appear as champions religious tolerance in the region.
Although the UAEs official religion is Islam, the nations constitution includes a clause guaranteeing the freedom to practice any religion. The International Institute for Management Development in Switzerland also ranked the UAE first regionally and third globally for religious tolerance.

Compare that to Saudi Arabia...ZERO Christian churches.
oops - Do not be deceived...
It - the reference to Mary - is no more than the same lip service the Quran itself pays to Mary. “Mother of Jesus” in Islam means no more than merely “mother of the good man and prophet Jesus” and gives no theological agreement to “Jesus the Christ”. Even as “prophet” the work of Jesus is itself given no theological significance in Islam. References to Jesus in Islam are also no more than lip service. True Christians should not be deceived.
Shortly I will be in church and will stand and say the Nicene Creed, which Muslims deny pretty much point by point.
“Rev Thompson also said that Mary symbolises obedience to God in both faiths, and that he looked forward to growing in deeper understanding with members of the Islamic faith.”
The “Rev” is an idiot. For an understanding of islam one need look no further than 9/11.
Taqiiya.
Destroy islam
a woman?!?
How are we going to meld the religions together into One True World Religion if you keep bringing up facts?
Jesus is coming! Ninety five days to go!! Get ready!!
How about making it a church?
Mussies point to Jesus’ birth of a woman as proof that He is not God. Their celebration of Mary comes pretty close to blasphemy
Just wait. I can envision the current Roman Catholic Pope going to the renamed Mosque in the U.A.E., putting “his blessings” on it and holding service in it.
With Catholicism in Europe in decline, he’s on the look out for new “Children of the Pope”, so why not get committed Muslims believing in him, the pope that is, as an emissary of Mohammad, and blessing their Muslim faith.
meh...shimmies are everywhere
Get ready for the one religion world.
The Nicene Creed and the sight of the cross infuriates them.
During one of those services, it occurred to me that Dubai, through a previous leader, had honored the true God, and were blessed.
On the other hand, Afghanistan tore down the only church in the nation, and from that point on went downhill. I worshipped in the rented building which had some of the beautiful green marble from the torn down church. The Afghan leaders were warned. A Christian, inspired by the Spirit, warned them that if they destroyed the church evil would come upon their nation, which it did.
Correct.
But there are priests and ministers. Since those men aren't OFFICIALLY allowed in Saudi Arabia they are called SPECIAL TEACHERS.
I know this and the priests were Dominicans. We had a daily 9:00 A.M. Mass in Ras Tanura (Eastern Province) Saudi Arabia. I attended there, along with several Filippino workers from ARAMCO for the five years my husband and I lived there and worked for ARAMCO. He had been a gas engineer for P.G.&.E. here in California. ARAMCO finally decided to NOT burn off the natural gas that comes up with petroleum. They captured the gas, liquified it, bottled it and sent it to all parts of our good earth.
But, you are correct: NO CHURCHES.
I remember seeing news clips of priests celebrating Mass close to the war fronts of WWII and such. CHURCHES are merely buildings. The Catholic Mass only needs a priest, not a specific building.
The minister we had was Lutheran but he presided at ALL Protestant non-Catholic, Christian services. They were held on Friday mornings.
I attend daily Mass here where I live in the USA, the most wonderful country on the planet.
I affirm.
We believe in one God,
the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
begotten from the Father before all ages,
God from God,
Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made;
of the same essence as the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven;
he became incarnate by the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary,
and was made human.
He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered and was buried.
The third day he rose again, according to the Scriptures.
He ascended to heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again with glory
to judge the living and the dead.
His kingdom will never end.
And we believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life.
He proceeds from the Father and the Son,
and with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified.
He spoke through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church.
We affirm one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look forward to the resurrection of the dead,
and to life in the world to come. Amen.
Hey! I've got vacation plans in November. Just my luck.
