Edward Pentin reports that the Vatican has confirmed Francis has not renewed Cardinal Gerhard Müller's 5 year mandate as CDF prefect. He will be replaced by the Spanish no.2 at the CDF, +Ladaria Ferrer SJ.
Archbishop Luis Maria Ladaria Ferrer SJ, new Prefect of CDF said after Synod 2014, absolutely no Communion for divorced and 'remarried.'
Ferrer "considered to be theologically conservative, subscribes to ressourcement, return to earlier sources, traditions & symbols of Church."
Can one Caucus a thread about a Jesuit? Would Jesuits be allowed to comment?
While I am not jumping for joy, not being reappointed when one’s appointment ends is not the same thing as being sacked in mid-term, and promoting someone who was given the number 2 slot under one’s predecessor is not the same thing as parachuting in your own man.
On the positive side, leaving Mueller with time on his hands may give him an ability to be fruitful in unforeseen ways. Is he still in charge of producing the Opera Omnia of Pope Benedict?
THe last line of the Wiki bio is very interesting. He is head of the commission to study women deacons. Scratch my thoughts about parachuting in one’s own man. Francis knows the guy very well. Whatever reasons landed him the presidency of the commission would be at play here. I hope the purpose of the presidency was to definitively bury the possibility . . . again.
BTW—also up on Rorate
https://rorate-caeli.blogspot.com
I googled the man after seeing the Rorate Post—and googl brought me back to Freepdom.
I read about him in the Spanish press...he’s got a long history holding various important positions in Vatican offices (he was Secretary of the CDF at one point) but seems to maintain a pretty low profile. He was involved in the commission on Limbo. He is considered orthodox, although some controversy seems to have arisen on his position over Orginal Sin, which was described by another theologian as “far from orthodox.” I don’t know what that means; no details were given.
Friends, this could have gone in an unthinkable direction, but it did not. Frankly, Im pleased with the appointment. When I consider the other names that have been tossed about for this post we have dodged a big one.
Fr. Z would be the first to admit he (Fr Z) has no charism of infallibility about Papal appointments, but the fact that he’s “pleased” is a good sign.
By the way, he also seems to be of good moral character - not typical for a Francis associate.
