The Knights of Columbus, long associated with swords, capes and chapeaus, will be going through a significant uniform change.

The traditional regalia worn by the Knights’ Fourth Degree members will be replaced, announced Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson during the Knights of Columbus 135th Supreme Convention being held in St. Louis Aug. 1. The address was available via livestream on EWTN.

Throughout the years, the regalia of the Fourth Degree, known as the patriotic degree, has gone through changes, Anderson said. When the Fourth Degree was first established, the uniform included white ties, top hats and tails.

In place of a tuxedo with a black bow tie, members will be wearing a blue blazer, an official Knights of Columbus tie and a beret, all with the Fourth Degree emblem on them, along with a white shirt and dark gray slacks. There was no mention as to whether the swords would remain a part of the uniform.

I am not Catholic. I did once work with a guy who was active in the K of C. He was also a friend.

I like the old one much better. The new one looks like a boys school uniform.

I’m a 4th Degree. Knights are supposed to look like Knights and not retired French paratroopers. The sword was great. All Knights for Christ have had a sword. I see no way a sword can be part of this very plain looking suit. I wonder how long it’ll be before the Swiss Guard looks like this because this uniform change smacks of Pope Francis. He despises pomp and tradition.

Stinks on ice - a poor imitation of the Army Blue uniform.

Although I see a (possibly lucrative)future in teaching the proper way to shape and wear a beret...bad enough when soldiers of various ranks are lazy about it.

Knights in my wife’s south Jersey parish got the word - not at all happy about it - the traditional uniforms are quite decorative and ornate and it really can be an impressive scene to see a group of Knights in uniform taking part in any service or activity. Uniforms can cost over a thousand dollars and several local members of the Knights just bought new ones which they pay for themselves - they’re working class guys and don’t have money to burn - “the people who made this decision don’t care what it costs us, they’re big shots with a lot of money and can afford it themselves” was one reaction......

I don’t know, but I doubt if the “Pope” has much or anything to say about it.

Is there anything else they're going to screw up, apart from wasting money keeping Crux afloat?

Depending on how the jacket is cut you can wear a sword with it.

I did with my Service Dress Blues (SDBs) when in the Navy.

SDBs are basically a business suit with added stripes. Had a hole cut in the left side to allow the sword hanger to poke through so you could wear it on occasion.

But I’ll say I like the older ones here.

Don’t know why it was changed. Makes no sense. Another part of Catholic tradition ended so the church can look more modern. Every Knight I know thinks it’s a dumb move. To me it still smacks of something Pope Francis wanted. He despises tradition.

Out with Tradition, in with Modernism. Out with a
the sword, in with a beret. As far as I know, this change in 4th Degree regalia was not discussed with any members at the council level. Certainly not discussed with Color Corp members, of which I belong. The first anyone heard about it was when Supreme Knight Carl Anderson mentioned the regalia change at yesterday’s Supreme Convention.
