Was Jesus a 'Feel-Good' Preacher?

We live in an age of "feel goodism" in a super-sensitive society in which people are offended by any perceived slight. Politically correct police patrol the air waves, red-flag certain buzzwords and label those who use them as bigots, racists, sexists and extremists. Freedom of speech is under attack, especially religious speech, which is often tagged "hate speech" by secularists who reject biblical truth. Paul warned Timothy, "For the time will come when people will not endure sound doctrine, but they will gather to themselves teachers in accordance with their own desires, having itching ears, and they will turn their ears away from the truth and turn to myths" (2 Tim. 4:3-4).

Contrary to some opinions, Jesus wasn't always a Mr. Nice Guy who never offended anyone with His words and carefully avoided controversy. Some people have the misguided notion that Jesus was a "feel-good" preacher who was always sweet, kind, diplomatic and never made waves or rocked the boat. Are you kidding me? What Bible have they been reading?

Jesus warned that you could wind up in Hell. He said that the chief Jewish religious leaders of the time were corrupt hypocrites, and said not to follow them. He warned that His followers might wind up being tortured or killed for following Him. He said you could sin just looking at women a certain way. He told a man to go and sin no more, but guys now say they can go to Southeast Asia, commit fornication, leave fatherless children, and spread disease, and they're still good people; that's not what Jesus said.

How is any of this feel-goodism?

No way. He upset the establishment and called into question their “tradition”.

I was about to say some money changers (a perfectly legitimate business) and the Hebrew clergy (an approved religious organization) would differ.

He challenged the status quo, ruffled feathers, made enemies and attacked the religious establishment.

Those were the folks who thought for sure he was claiming to be God. None of his reasoned responses could cause them to reconsider.

Oh well, he tried, but when queried by people who were spiritually no different than today's average "Gotcha!" interviewer, he didn't want to waste a lot of time. He knew their hearts.

Meanwhile, the common man recognized the son of David from his father's trait of mercy. They wanted to see, and wanted to walk.

He had a long line of patients who were actually interested in his instructions for healing.

Do you mean like when he said “He who has seen me hath seen the Father?”

Those were the folks who thought for sure he was claiming to be God. None of his reasoned responses could cause them to reconsider.

Because He was, in nature being one with the Father.

Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God. (John 5:18)

(alla kai patera idion elege ton theon). “His own” (idion) in a sense not true of others. That is precisely what Jesus meant by “My Father.” See Rom_8:32 for ho idios huios, “his own Son.” - WORD PICTURES IN THE NEW TESTAMENT by Archibald Thomas Robertson

In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory. And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke. Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts . (Isaiah 6:1-5)

Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me. And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not. Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed. (Isaiah 6:8-10)

who is this Son of man? (John 12:34)

Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again, He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.

These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him. (John 12:39-41)

Moreover, by ascribing titles, glory and attributes to the Son of God which are only ascribed to God, then they Holy Spirit is revealing the Lord Jesus to be God manifest in the flesh .

Yes, Lewis’s Trilemma is the argument used by atheists and heretics who wish to acknowledge The Lord Jesus Christ’s wisdom as a moral teacher but deny His divinity.

It simply does not work. All because Jesus proclaimed His divinity, thereby eliminating the claim of His validity (i.e, the claimant calling Him a liar or a lunatic).

Meaning it would eliminate the claim of Jesus to His validity if He really did not manifest that He was what He claimed to be, which in word and deed He did, thank God.

Exactly. Which logically destroys the “feel-good” preacher claim.

The more obvious argument against it the “feel good” preacher is how He treated hypocrites and those who inappropriately used the name of God.

Finally, He asked those who followed Him to do a large of things that didn’t feel good, nor were they designed to feel good; many of them were told of suffering and pain if they believed in Him.

Yes,forsaking all to follow Him, and gouging out an eye (even if hyperbole) in order to avoid unquenchable fire is quite contrary to Joe Osteen preaching.

Was Jesus a 'Feel-Good' Preacher?

Well...

Matthew 15:16
"Are you still so dull?" Jesus asked them.

Matthew 23

  1.  Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples:
  2.  "The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat.
  3.  So you must obey them and do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach.
  4.  They tie up heavy loads and put them on men's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.
  5.  "Everything they do is done for men to see: They make their phylacteries  wide and the tassels on their garments long;
  6.  they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues;
  7.  they love to be greeted in the marketplaces and to have men call them `Rabbi.'
  8.  "But you are not to be called `Rabbi,' for you have only one Master and you are all brothers.
  9.  And do not call anyone on earth `father,' for you have one Father, and he is in heaven.
 10.  Nor are you to be called `teacher,' for you have one Teacher, the Christ.
 11.  The greatest among you will be your servant.
 12.  For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
 13.  "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven in men's faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to.
 14.  Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.
 15.   "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as you are.
 16.  "Woe to you, blind guides! You say, `If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.'
 17.  You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes the gold sacred?
 18.  You also say, `If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gift on it, he is bound by his oath.'
 19.  You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred?
 20.  Therefore, he who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it.
 21.  And he who swears by the temple swears by it and by the one who dwells in it.
 22.  And he who swears by heaven swears by God's throne and by the one who sits on it.
 23.  "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices--mint, dill and cummin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law--justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.
 24.  You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.
 25.  "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.
 26.  Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.
 27.  "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites!  You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men's bones and everything unclean.
 28.  In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.
 29.  "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous.
 30.  And you say, `If we had lived in the days of our forefathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.'
 31.  So you testify against yourselves that you are the descendants of those who murdered the prophets.
 32.  Fill up, then, the measure of the sin of your forefathers!
 33.  "You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell?
 34.  Therefore I am sending you prophets and wise men and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify; others you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town.
 35.  And so upon you will come all the righteous blood that has been shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.
 36.  I tell you the truth, all this will come upon this generation.
 37.  "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing.
 38.  Look, your house is left to you desolate.
 39.  For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, `Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.' "

Mark 7:26-27
 26.  The woman was a Greek, born in Syrian Phoenicia. She begged Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter.
 27.  "First let the children eat all they want," he told her, "for it is not right to take the children's bread and toss it to their dogs."

And St. Paul chimes in...

Galatians 5:12
As for those agitators, I wish they would go the whole way and emasculate themselves!

Matthew 10:34-36 King James Version (KJV)

34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.

35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.

36 And a man's foes shall be they of his own household.

Our Lord Jesus told it just as it is, just as the prophets did. People just don't like to hear it. They killed the prophets of old. They killed our Lord Jesus. People do not like it when their wickedness is exposed.
