Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Meditating Upon The Names and Attributes of God

The Potter

(Old Testament)

Isaiah 64:8

Yet you, Lord, are our Father.
    We are the clay, you are the potter;
we are all the work of your hand.

(End of Scripture Passage)

The Potter

Back when I was in College as a Graphic Design Major, I strayed downstairs to the Sculpture Department and learned how to "Throw a Pot" on the Potter's Wheel. It is a LOT harder than it looks! If you don't apply the correct Pressure both INSIDE and OUT, the clay becomes mis-shaped and ruined. Then you have to ball up the clay and start over. We need to be shaped by God both inside and out. Beauty on the outside is useless if it contains a mean, distorted soul.

We pray for the Repentance, Restoration, and Renewal of Our Beloved Nation.

But now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Our Father in Heaven,
We Come before You in Prayer
For we know That You Are the Potter,
And We Are the Clay
We pray that we will always be supple and yielding to Your touch
So That You will form us into Your Image.

We pray for the Repentance, Restoration, and Renewal of Our Beloved Nation.

But now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand.

May the Leaders of Our Own Beloved USA
Receive Wisdom from You
to do the Right Thing.

We Pray For The Swift and Sure Coming of Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Establish His Kingdom,
and Make All Things Right.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

"They just opened a Ceramics Studio on Baker Street," my Sister exclaimed, "And its only $25.00 for a ten-week course (materials and firing extra)"

Remembering fondly my experiences in College at the Potter's Wheel, I eagerly signed up, and paid the money for what looked like was going to be a magnificent excursion into getting my hands dirty and creating something new!

Upon entering the "classroom", I saw shelves and shelves of little clay statues. kittens, puppies, big-eyed children, birds, cartoon characters, etc, all the same style and all of similar size. These were made from molds, and available for purchase. They were called "Greenware", and had to be fired (for a fee equal to half the cost of the Greenware) in a kiln before they could be handled, or they would crumble into dust. The first firing would turn the Greenware white and make it solid, called "Bisque Ware", and only then could be painted or glazed (requiring another firing) Then, the "teacher" would sell us the paint and brushes to apply either stain or glazes. Stain was the quicker and cheaper way, but, to me, that wasn't doing Ceramics! And WHERE was the Potter's Wheel? There wasn't one in sight anywhere.

My Sister and I, though both disappointed, wanted to make the most of it, so we both purchased identical large Ginger Jars to make a set of matching lamps for Mom. The Greenware were $15.00 each, and the glazes we chose required two firings ($30.00) and then we had to take the jars to an electrical guy to install the lamp parts, and buy nice shades. Mom loved the Lamps and for over thirty years had a place of honor on my Dad's treasured Stereo Speakers. (Yes. The speakers were so HUGE they served as end-tables)

I was still not happy with the lack of creativity at the Ceramics Studio, so I bought an enormous Greenware Elephant Planter. Since the Elephant took up the entire kiln, firings were the full price of the Greenware ($25.00), and since I did the entire thing in Glazes it took yet ANOTHER firing, and the gold edging to a half-firing, making the Elephant cost over $100.00. The Lamps are now at my Sister's house, and the Elephant, which has weathered 7 moves, The Great Blizzard of '78, Hurricane Wilma and Katrina, and the BIG MOVE back to Boston in the back seat of my car, now sits in the corner of my Living Room with a nice Tiffany Style lamp ( which I found by the side of the road) on top.

My Brother has the Stereo Speakers, but they are TOO BIG for his Living Room.

I tell this long, personal story today, because of the Wonderful Name of God as the Potter Working the Wheel. He does not just cast us from a mold, like cheap kitschy Greenware, nor does He make us all the same. He fashions us, inside and out, applying pressure here and there, to make each of us something special. Sometimes we have to "go through the fire", and for REAL Quality, we go through it more than once. That last "firing" is often the one that puts the "Touch of Gold" in us, like the Elephant. And, although we are still "breakable", we are not like Greenware, which crumbles into dust at the slightest provocation. Most of all, though, Our God gives us a bit of himself...that Spark that grows into the Fire of Creativity, that makes us His only creature that consciously, and deliberately, makes Art.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

God Bless America!

Praying for Israel:

Jer. 33:6 Behold, I will bring it health and healing; I will heal them and reveal to them the abundance of peace and truth. 7 And I will cause the captives of Judah and the captives of Israel to return, and will rebuild those places as at the first. 8 I will cleanse them from all their iniquity by which they have sinned against Me, and I will pardon all their iniquities by which they have sinned and by which they have transgressed against Me. 9 Then it shall be to Me a name of joy, a praise, and an honor before all nations of the earth, who shall hear all the good that I do to them; they shall fear and tremble for all the goodness and all the prosperity that I provide for it.’

10 “Thus says the Lord: ‘Again there shall be heard in this place—of which you say, “It is desolate, without man and without beast”—in the cities of Judah, in the streets of Jerusalem that are desolate, without man and without inhabitant and without beast, 11 the voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the voice of those who will say:

“Praise the Lord of hosts,
For the Lord is good,
For His mercy endures forever”—
and of those who will bring the sacrifice of praise into the house of the Lord. For I will cause the captives of the land to return as at the first,’ says the Lord.

Love your stories!

Indeed, as the clay in the hand of the potter, who, when he wishes expands it and when he wishes contracts it; so are we in Your hand, O You who remembers deeds of the loving kindness; Look to the covenant and do not regard our evil inclination.
Indeed, as the stone in the hand of the mason, who, when he wishes retains it and when he wishes smashes it; so are we in Your hand, O You who gives life and brings death; Look to the covenant and do not regard our evil inclination.

Ki Hinei Kachomer

Yom Kippur: If we are the clay

If we are the clay in the potter’s hand,
may we mould of ourselves a vessel
in which to hold Your love.

If we are the stone in the mason’s hand,
may we build of ourselves a sanctuary
that You may dwell within.

If we are the iron in the blacksmith’s hand,
may we forge of ourselves a foundation
upholding truth and peace.

If we are the tiller in the helmsman’s hand,
may we steer the ship to safety
across tempestuous seas.

If we are the glass in the glazier’s hand,
may we make of ourselves a mirror,
to reflect Your boundless light.

If we are the cloth in the weaver’s hand,
may we make of ourselves a tapestry
to beautify Your world.

If we are the silver in the silversmith’s hand,
may we shed our dross in the crucible,
yet our purest essence retain.

Somehow it will all coordinate together, everyone to his specific design and purpose.

Like being given the keys to your forever home, opening the door, and seeing the perfect instrument crafted just for you, awaiting your arrival and the life and love it deserves.

Certainly your reaction would bring immense joy to the designer, just because. It’s why He put it there for you. So when you came through the door...

When I was reading your post earlier in the week, I couldn’t help but remember my pottery class I took in the evening at a community college some 40 years ago. . . I was excited to sit at the wheel, afraid I would goof up. The instructor as I recall was quite persnickety and was very protective of her kiln. She would take a string or something like that and literally cut the students’ “work of art in half” and show that if there were any imperfections it would literally blowup and smash all the other pots in the kiln. I didn’t question her. . .and I guess was too lazy at the time to look it up. . .but long story short. . .I immediately took to hand building and glazing. . .my mother appreciated my art work (believe me. .nothing spectacular but at least I tried.) Years later my mother accidentally broke one of the pots and meticulously glued it back together. I still have it somewhere. . . That was the first and last class for me. . .but I always make sure that the kids have playdough (the homemade kind with cream of tartar) in Kids’ Church every year. Have Thine Own Way Lord. . .Have Thine Own Way. . .Thou art the Potter, I am the clay. . . . . . .

Using greenware exclusively avoids the issues of bubbles causing explosions in the kiln, because it's liquid clay (slip) poured into molds. But I prefer the Wheel! (as you do! :-))
