"Excellent"

EXCELLENT!!!!

Translated here as "Exalted", I prefer the Word "Excellent" (KJV), as it is Self-Active. God is Excellent All By Himself, and does don need "another" to Exalt Him. (Just me quibbling with the Awesome and Erudite Scholars of the NIV, with my own humble opinion!) "Excellent" is a Wonderful Name For Our Wonderful God.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

A slang expression that popped up in the 90's among the young people of America was popularized by the movie "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure". The expression was "Most Excellent!", and became part of the American Vocabulary for a while. It seems to have faded, and other superlatives have taken its place. In fact, lately, the slang term for something extremely good is "SICK". I am not kidding. In my day, it was "Outta Sight!", but now I am dating myself!

The silly thing about Bill and Ted's "Most Excellent" is that "Excellent" is already a superlative, and adding the word "Most" to it is a redundancy. Perhaps that was what was meant to be comical. Excellent is Excellent. There is no "Most" about it. "Perfect" is a similar word, and doesn't warrant a modifier.

The word that is translated as "exalted" in the NIV, and "Excellent" in the King James is given as yet another Glorious name for Our God. There is nobody "more" excellent, or even "most excellent". His is the Name Above All Other Names.

[Hebrews 11:6]

Notwithstanding the rest of your fine post, your preference for KJV's rendering of "excellent" over NIV's "exalted" caught my curiosity, so I researched it, if you're interested.

The Hebrew word is śāgab, which is used twenty times in the OT NIV as:
protect (4); be exalted, exalted, is exalted, lifted, lofty (2 each); high, is kept safe, safe, strengthened, strong, unscalable (1 each).

The Concordant Literal Version has "impregnable."

The usages referring to height and strength seem to imply an unassailable mountain fortress, which seems to me to fit better with "exalted," in the sense that the Object of our praise will always deserve it.
