Another School Shooting: Why and What Should We Do?

Two weeks ago we endured the third anniversary of the death of my beloved pastor and father-in-law, David Fitzpatrick. David was killed by an impaired (alcohol and drugs), hit-and-run motorist. David’s killer pleaded guilty to first degree vehicular homicide, among other charges, and is now spending many years in prison. …

I recall vividly the gut-wrenching moments on May 4, 2015 when we knew there was a bicyclist down in the area where my father-in-law used to ride. The calls to David’s cell phone that would never be answered; the rushed and lonely drive from my job to the crash site, still not knowing for sure whether David was alive; the moment I encountered the Georgia State Patrol officer who confirmed our worst fears; pulling into my mother-in-law’s driveway and watching her, my wife, and my wife’s sister awash in grief; attempting to comfort our four children; making the phone calls to David’s and Margie’s siblings, my parents, et al, telling them of the terrible news—like so many others who deal with such a loss, all of this sent me to an awful place I had never before been and never want to return.

What’s more, the investigation into David’s death led us to discover that his killer had a decades-long criminal past (including multiple drug-related crimes) that was ignored—due to a lack of proper inquiry—by our local law enforcement when he was on trial for other charges in 2010. …

Thus, after once again witnessing students slaughtered at the hands of a lone gunman bent on evil, I understand—though I typically strongly disagree with—those who want “action” from their government on “gun control.” I also understand those asking, “Why did this happen to us?” …

I like what the Lt. Gov. of Tx had to say on the matter. They’re (libs) already pretty comfortable killing the most innocent and helpless among us—the unborn—what’s a few dead school kids?

An anti-prayer troll has posted a Chicago paper article as a gun-grabber argument to that page.

He then attacks the notion of Christian schools saying that they can self-select students and therefore are safer for reasons other than morality.

Nope.

The shooter in Florida should have been addressed by the criminal justice system long before the shooting and expulsion happened. EXPULSION in public schools should be no different from the admin policies of religious schools. Put the infracting students on notice, then remove them (and off they go to REFORM school).

But since the 1960s the hard (and psycho) far left has been for chaos and against mental judgments. “Don’t stigmatize”. So instead they get pills (which they don’t take or augment with soft and hard drugs) so they appear normal, until they show they have deep problems.

That’s been my statement for years.

Stop locking down the free society.

Lock up the criminally insane. If they are not responsible for their activities by reason of insanity (and they are often long under care and evaluation before they flip out) then they should be under house “arrest” or with a legal guardian AT ALL TIMES.

I do think that serious consideration needs to be done in how schools are going to be guarded and intruder alerts are going to be issued. We are one Beslan attack away from a massacre that would dwarf any school shooting incident.

Schools are soft targets.

I think that a redesign considerations could have greater impact than putting up 5 armed guards in towers (etc.).

Can there be one external gate that all must pass through (with badges)? Employers do this all the time with parking garages and building entry. Put one guard/receptionist at this point.

Don’t use the fire alarm system to indicate an intruder alert. A safe house lockdown situation is different from a fire drill which not only sends people outside, but requires that they line up and not leave the premises. If you are going to have an evacuation call, they need to know SCRAM (start cutting right away) and disperse as far away and decentralized as they can.

I don’t know what the big deal is about school security. When I went to high school in Houston, we all had picture ID badges, and you better not get caught without out it on! We also had controlled access in and out of the school building, and NO open campuses! You couldn’t come in without a security person looking you over. And, if you were wearing a trench coat in 90 degree weather, that would get you pulled to the side and questioned and searched.

This was nothing new. It happened in 1970 through 1973.

Also, as Mr. Thomas pointed out a few months ago, the educrats, politicians, pundits, et al need to stop confusing evil with mental illness: https://www.trevorgrantthomas.com/2018/02/stop-mistaking-evil-for-mental-illness.html

I wouldn’t go anywhere near a school with a bunch of armed children.

Pass.

Totally driven by emotion mixed with extremely poor impulse control combined with a firearm?

Uh, no.

The first is defensive, the second is the right to keep and bear arms for offense. Also, close down every school that does not teach our children to read at the end of first grade, and disqualify the teachers from teaching ever again. And disband the NEA. That’s for starters.

Sounds great. Tell me....are there seasons on the planet you live on? No, no, no, no. I'm just kidding. Really. I poke fun.
Because, as much as these ideas thrill, they'll never happen in my lifetime.

If you look at school shootings since Columbine, there is a definite profile for school shooters. They are white, come from the middle to upper middle class and are alienated from society. They also frequently telegraph their intent through social media. They could be recognized and diverted from the schools and be banned from having weapons. In the case of Parkland FL, the shooter had dozens of encounters with law enforcement and school officials and even the FBI.... these were all ignored. Many of these shootings were fully preventable had authorities recognized the obvious signs these individuals were bent on committing mass murder and acted to take them out of society for mandatory mental health commitment. Instead of the ludicrous calls for banning guns, why isn’t there more effort being made to identify these potential shooters and strengthen laws that allow for involuntary mental health commitment?

Wow. You would almost swear the liberals are in favor of school shootings, so they then have a crisis they won’t let go to waste..

Hi guy. Earth is the planet. Think “Lord of the Flies”. a classroom full of kids with .22 guns. Do you think anyone is going to be bullied? And if one goes off on another or the rest of the class, a roomful of “kids” will “take care of the offender” in an unreasonable “childlike” fashion. Of course the Pistol part is sarcasm. The Kevlar, not so much. I was taken out and taught to shoot at age 12. It is said the reason we won WWI and WWII is that unlike the rest of the people in the world, Americans were taught to hunt and shoot as Kids. Thus, when we shot at Germans, we hit them. Real gun control.
