I guess that they would be happier with a statue of John the Baptist, since they are Baptists. To me, this move is total idiocy on the part of the congregation.

I feel a little sad that this happened. I have a lot of love and respect for Baptists (my husband's side of the family is solidly Baptist, and they're the dearest people in the world) and I can't imagine any of them having a problem with a statue of Jesus.

But maybe they'll sell it and use the $$ for the missions. That would be a positive and large-hearted response.

"This is why Christ is represented as though he is stepping outside of the building, not just confined to the idleness of inner walls," Baker wrote in the letter, which his friend also posted on Facebook.

I can see how many would be confused by this as Christ obviously was never in the building to start with.

Is it a statue or a graven image?

Retards. Jesus is “too Catholic”. Well just why the hell are they going to “church”? For the pot lucks and cake walks?

Weird. I’ve been a Baptist since birth and have never seen a statue of Jesus in a Baptist church. It’s the “graven image” thing. It would creep me out to be in a church with a statue.

“You must not bow down to them or worship them;Do not make an idol for yourself, whether in the shape of anything in the heavens above or on the earth below or in the waters under the earth. You must not bow down to them or worship them”

“Diligently watch yourselves — because you did not see any form on the day the Lord spoke to you out of the fire at Horeb — so you don’t act corruptly and make an idol for yourselves in the shape of any figure: a male or female form”

Disputable issue addressed in general by Romans 14:1 imo. Don’t pass judgment.

Red Bank Baptist Church leaders sent a letter to the artist, Bert Baker Jr., earlier this month, informing him that the congregation had voted to remove the statue because it was being perceived as a Catholic icon and was causing confusion among churchgoers.

'Perceived' by WHOM?

Sounds like a teaching moment to me!

I guess their Nativity scene in December is gonna be a bit sparse this year; too.

Why would anyone have a Jesus statue? It’s bound to be inaccurate, and He doesn’t look like that today. See Rev. 1.

I understand as a Baptist we have empty crosses because Jesus defeated that cross

Well, as long as those baptists didn’t begin idolizing it - kneeling in front of it, praying to it, kissing it, touching it, watching to see if it bleeds...

This is why Scripture says do NOT make any graven image. No one has seen God and Jesus is NOT described anywhere except in Isiah where it says there was nothing special about His looks. A graven image is NOT God and never can be. We are to worship Him.

Many protestants don't even allow a cross in the church because we don't worship the cross but the one that was on it. If you have a cross with Jesus on it, we are reminded that He is not on it any longer. Stop trying to make images to worship, but worship the true and living God. I go to a non denominational church and it took years to get a cross mounted on a back wall just to please some.

Any statue or portrait could be an image of uncle Joe for all we know. Davinci painted Jesus as some blue eyed European with blue eyes eating a french bread loaf at the Last Supper.

It's all ridiculous. Stop practicing religion and start to worship the living risen Savior.

Red Bank Baptist Church in Lexington, about 120 miles northeast of Charleston

Nonsense.

Lexington is NW of Charleston.

150 mi NE of Charleston is around Bald Head Island NC.

Except “Catholic” statues of Jesus have him still hanging on the cross.
