(New Testament)

Matthew 9

The Calling of Matthew

9 As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.

10 While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples. 11 When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

12 On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 13 But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’[a] For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

The way that Jesus called Matthew to Discipleship was with a "Shared Meal".

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

I was working out at the gym many years ago, when I noticed that the woman on the treadmill next to me was someone I knew who had attended my church some years before. I greeted her warmly, and she responded, :I heard about YOU going to that (insert notorious Biker Club name here) Biker Ball. What kind of a witness is THAT?!?"

I tried to explain that there had actually been an opportunity to BE a "witness" but she wouldn't hear of it, and promptly excoriated me as a sinner and backslider. Uh. OK.

What I didn't go into (because she had already written me off) was that we had gone by car, because it looked like rain. When we came out, it was a positive DELUGE, and one Biker looked in despair at his bike that was sitting in a huge puddle. My husband and I offered to drive the man home, as it was in my hubby's home town and we knew the area well. The man was so grateful, and said that he would get his buddies to bring him back the next day to get his bike.

On the way to the man's house we talked about the Ball, about Bikes, and so on. Suddenly the man blurted out:

"I really DO want to know about God, but I haven't been to church in YEARS and I don't think He wants me anyway!"

On my honor, I know I didn't say anything that would prompt him to say that, but, you KNOW I couldn't let that just go without a conversation about the Grace of God! I was able to present the Gospel in terms that made sense to him.

When we reached our destination, he thanked us, and looked at me and said, "I'll think about that."

In my heart, I believe that one day I will see this Biker in Heaven. Perhaps the Treadmill Lady will see him too, and finally understand.
