Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

My Mom (RIP) was a big fan of the TV show "Law and Order". She was especially fond of the episodes that featured Jerry Orbach as Detective Lenny Briscoe. Perhaps it was because Orbach was actually a BROADWAY actor and singer, and my Mom was also a singer from that era. In any case, she could watch the "Jerry" episodes for hours at a stretch, and she knew a lot of the repartee by heart.

One of Det. Briscoe's favorite tactics was to separate "partners in crime" and interview them individually, often hinting that the other was going to roll over and blame the other. When faced with betrayal, the suspect would lose control of the lie and spill out the truth.

Sometimes, however, the stories from the suspects were too perfect. They matched in every detail, including the way they were expressed. This was a sure indication that the suspects had colluded beforehand, and matched their stories perfectly, thinking that they wouldn't get caught. Det. Briscoe, who was hard-boiled and street smart, was even MORE suspicious when the stories were too perfect.

The Torah proclaims that nobody can be punished for a crime on the testimony of only one witness. Two or more witnesses providing corroborating evidence were necessary in order to convict. This wise bit of judicial practice is continued to this day in our own legal system. The Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John are four corroborating accounts of the Life of Jesus. However, they are not "carbon copies" of each other. Some include details that others lack, some (especially Luke and John) record streams of conversation, some are big on miracles, others on teaching. Luke's Gospel contains prayers spoken out loud by John the Baptist's father, Mary of Nazareth, the Angels present at Jesus' birth, and the aged prophets Simeon and Anna. John's Gospel contains the audible prayers of Jesus to His Father in Heaven (John 17). I was AWESTRUCK the first time I read that Chapter.

All four tell the story of the Last Supper, the Passover Seder celebrated by Jesus and His Disciples. The very fact that all four tell the same story with their own personal details makes it credible.

Detective Lenny would be impressed!

A beautiful insight into the gospels. They tell the old, old story of Jesus and His glory. Thank you for your daily blessing.

My husband and I love Jerry Orbach/Lenny Briscoe. The original Law and Order is still one of the shows that I watch whenever it is on. I’ve seen many of the shows at least five or six times, if not more. He died far too young (69).

"The Miracle Of The Loaves and Fishes"
Giovanni Lanfranco

N those days the multitude being very great, and having nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples unto him, and saith unto them,

I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now been with me three
days, and have nothing to eat:

And if I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint by the way: for divers of them came from far.
And his disciples answered him, From whence can a man satisfy these men with bread here in the wilderness?

And he asked them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven.

And he commanded the people to sit down on the ground: and he took the seven loaves, and gave thanks, and brake, and gave to his disciples to set before them; and they did set them before the people.

And they had a few small fishes: and he blessed, and commanded to set them also before them.

So they did eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets.

And they that had eaten were about four thousand: and he sent them away.

And straightway he entered into a ship with his disciples, and came into the parts of Dalmanutha.

And the Pharisees came forth, and began to question with him, seeking of him a sign from heaven, tempting him.

And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and saith, Why doth this generation seek after a sign? verily I say unto you, There shall no sign be given unto this generation.

And he left them, and entering into the ship again departed to the other side.

Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, neither had they in the ship with them more than one loaf.

And he charged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod.

And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have no bread.

And when Jesus knew it, he saith unto them, Why reason ye, because ye have no bread? perceive ye not yet, neither understand? have ye your heart yet hardened?

Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not? and do ye not remember?

When I brake the five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? They say unto him, Twelve.

And when the seven among four thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? And they said, Seven.

And he said unto them, How is it that ye do not understand?
