Judge Says Philadelphia Can Cut Contracts with Catholic Groups for Refusing Same-Sex Adoption

HILADELPHIA, July 17, 2018 (LifeSiteNews) – The city of Philadelphia has the power to suspend contracts with religious adoption agencies who refuse to place children in same-sex homes, a federal judge ruled Friday.

Last year, a story about Bethany Christian Services turning away a same-sex couple raised public awareness of both it and Catholic Social Services (CSS) having a policy of placing children only in homes with a mother and/or a father.

Despite both being expressly-religious organizations and the stance aligning with traditional Christian teaching, the city claimed to have been surprised by the revelation, and suspended its contracts with the groups in March. While Bethany moved to comply with the state to restore its contract, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports, CSS took the state to court. CSS is operated by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

“The foster care program operated by CSS is, at its root, one designed to provide services to vulnerable children and young people,” the archdiocese’s Kenneth Gavin told LifeSiteNews in March. “Meeting those needs in a safe and caring environment is at the heart of this ministry. Care is provided for all those in need with dignity, charity, and respect regardless of their background.”

On Friday, U.S. District Court Judge Petrese Tucker denied CSS’s request for a temporary restraining order on the grounds that the city had a legitimate interest to see “that the pool of foster parents and resource caregivers is as diverse and broad as the children in need of foster parents,” and that the adoption agency’s policy was a violation of Philadelphia’s Fair Practices Ordinance prohibiting discrimination by city contractors.“The foster care program operated by CSS is, at its root, one designed to provide services to vulnerable children and young people,” the archdiocese’s Kenneth Gavin told LifeSiteNews in March. “Meeting those needs.......

Another area for the church to offer private adoption services and detach from govt money
A tragedy however for foster-to-adopt kids

Placing babies with homosexuals is a death sentence for the children.

Anyone with morals knows this. This “judge” does not care.

It's the same with education and medical services. The Church is on a slippery slope when it accepts government money. That in itself breaks the separation of Church and State. Government money comes with strings attached, and I can't disagree with the courts when they side with the gov in these cases.

Do adoption agencies work on an exclusive basis? What I mean is, if a Catholic agency tries to find adoptive parents for a child, does that stop other agencies, which do not have rules against same-sex adoptive couples, from looking for adoptive parents?

If adoption agencies do not work on an exclusive basis, what is the objection to Catholic adoption agencies? They are not stopping other agencies from finding other kinds of adoptive parents.

It will be interesting to see how the legal premise behind this resolves with the other decisions that say the gubermint cannot cut contracts with Planned Parenthood, withhold funds from sanctuary cities, etc. Seems like these are in conflict.

Changing our culture one judge at a time.

Liberal really should pay attention to history.

Anything one judge can change, another can reverse.

We are at an interesting point in our history where a very small minority is being allowed to overrule the majority. It is an unbalance of power that will eventually be corrected. The problem for homosexuals is that the correction may go too far...

Same thing happened in Massachusetts. There, the Catholic relief agency had to shut down, close doors, turn off the lights and send employees home. The children they could have helped in the future were denied their services.

Any private group that depends on government money has joined a defacto special interest group that includes Planned Parenthood.

Contracts mean nothing to liberals and progressives.

Nothing will stand in the way of their agenda.

Look at the decades long contract they broke with the BSA.

The Church is at its best as a counter cultural institution. It is a beacon for all when it does not conform to the prevailing perversions of a decadent ,neo pagan society.

Most homosexuals were sexually molested as children.

They seek to normalize their behavior to achieve easier access to MOLEST MORE CHILDREN!

On page 37, the other relevant result relates to men.

The 13th research question addressed, of homosexual men who have been molested, what percentage were molested before self-identification as homosexual men, and what percentage were molested after self-identification as homosexual? Of homosexual men who were molested, 68% were molested before self-identification as homosexual, and 32% were molested after self-identification as homosexual.

I work for a Catholic based health ystem. Years ago changes in the MA health laws and in conjunction with Obama care we were forced to close down our adoption operation. This “orphanage” was created in the late 1800’s as a result of immigrants who came to the US and died as a result of illness or industrial accident, leaving many children orphans.

This operation was in place for more than 125 years. It accepted public money through Medicare and Medicaid. But that was supplemental to donations and the endowment.

When the laws changed it was mandated that they “the nuns” open up the process to gay couples and singles. This was something that was fundamentally against the moral stance of the sisters. They chose to spend down the endowment and close the doors.

I would love to know who benefitted from THAT? Certainly not the kids. Or the adoptive parents.

It’s just one little story. But it is part of a mosaic depicting the shit towards socialism in our country.

Another piece of that mosaic is how my spell checker sees “shit” instead of shift as a normal word used in everyday language. Sorry about that slipping through.
