I’ve noted in the past that when our parents fell they did so by eating the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
They had been holy, but they gave that up to be merely moral.
Morality apart from holiness is itself the problem.
That doesn’t mean morality is the worst of all problems; but, if mankind’s best is at the level that stands insufficient before God then we’ve got a real problem!
And it took the Cross to address that problem.
