Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem
"Ooooo...I LOVE Mid_Century Modern!" crooned the Flea-Market Customer as she assessed the price of the kidney-shaped lime-green Formica hair-pin-legged coffee table.
Knowing that "Mid-Century Modern" is the new Chippendale, the canny vendor had put a $900.00 price tag on the kitschy monstrosity, and would probably get it by the end of the day.
Since I was born in 1952, smack-dab in the middle of the last Century, I guess I'm "Mid-Century Modern" too. And yet, the "Brave New World" seems to have little use for people my age, and would prefer to hire someone with an advanced degree in "Wymyns' Studies" or "Advanced Critical Ethnic Theory". But...MAYBE the tide is turning! At least when it comes to Home Decor anyway.
As I have mentioned, I grew up in Boston during the 50's and 60's, and have been very much formed by that era. Along with the Kidney-shaped coffee tables, chrome kitchen sets, and portraits of JFK, many homes had an odd little picture of a very European Jesus knocking on a big oak door. Sometimes the door was depicted without a doorknob or a latch, meaning it had to be opened from the INSIDE. Who knew that these pictures were derived from the mysterious and nearly forbidden Book of Revelation? And who knew that Jesus wasn't knocking on the door of a bunch of pagans, asking to be let in to evangelize them. No...He is knocking on the door of the CHURCH.
YIKES.
