Some Catholics, under the mistaken impression that they are being faithful, have telegraphed the message that they will not leave the Church for ANY reason.

The clerics interpret that as they can do absolutely ANYTHING and still have some rump remnant that will attend and contribute. Hence they think they will get away with it.

You are half-correct. Catholics, being FULLY faithful, have said they will not leave CHRIST'S CHURCH for ANY reason.

CHRIST'S CHURCH, not the Pope's church, not the Bishop's church, not the Priest's church.

I went to 7:30am Mass on Sunday (my day off from interpreting for the deaf LOL). Father gave a very impassioned homily about what's going on in the Church. It was wonderful. He ended by saying (I'm paraphrasing) "The Holy Father, the Pope, is NOT in charge of the Church! The Bishops are NOT in charge of the Church! We priests are NOT in charge of the Church!" He then pointed to the Tabernacle. "HE is in charge of Holy Mother Church! Never forget that!"
