Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The Gospel of John

(New Testament)

John 8

Dispute Over Who Jesus Is

21 Once more Jesus said to them, “I am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come.”

22 This made the Jews ask, “Will he kill himself? Is that why he says, ‘Where I go, you cannot come’?”

23 But he continued, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. 24 I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he, you will indeed die in your sins.”

25 “Who are you?” they asked.

“Just what I have been telling you from the beginning,” Jesus replied. 26 “I have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is trustworthy, and what I have heard from him I tell the world.”

27 They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father. 28 So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up[a] the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me. 29 The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him.” 30 Even as he spoke, many believed in him.

(End of Scripture Passage)

Jesus continues His preaching and teaching, in spite of opposition to the religious authorities.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Singing a song is like acting in a three-minute drama, so I often use exercises from acting class when I teach voice. Here is my favorite:

Take this sentence with seven words in it, and say it ou loud seven times, each time emphasizing a different word in the sequence, so that the meaning of the sentence changes:

1. ARE you going out with me tonight?

2. Are YOUgoing out with me tonight?

3. Are you GOING out with me tonight?

4. Are you going OUT with me tonight?

5. Are you going out WITH me tonight?

6. Are you going out with ME tonight?

7. Are you going out with me TONIGHT?

This simple exercise proves how the mere emphasis on a single word can change everything. This is lost in Texts and Tweets, and often causes offense when none was meant. The late Aretha Franklin took a song by Otis Redding (Respect) and changed it's meaning completely, from a macho R&B song to a feminist anthem. It was all about inflection and emphasis.

The Pharisees tried very hard to trip Jesus and make Him say something foolish that would turn His followers away from Him. They asked trick questions and then were astonished by His answers. Sometimes they would misinterpret what He said or twist His words, all to no avail. Perhaps this discussion of Jesus saying he was going to "kill himself" was the most egregious of these false interpretations. I mean, really. Is THAT what they got from "Where I am going, you can't follow" ? Even with my Seven Word Acting Exercise, it's a stretch to get that meaning from this sentence. I have a feeling that they were DELIBERATELY misinterpreting it!

Numbers 6:23 Say to Aaron and his sons, This is the way you shall bless the Israelites. Say to them, The Lord bless you and watch, guard, and keep you; The Lord make His face to shine upon and enlighten you and be gracious (kind, merciful, and giving favor) to you; The Lord lift up His [approving] countenance upon you and give you peace (tranquility of heart and life continually). And they shall put My name upon the Israelites, and I will bless them.

And this we do, proclaim and agree in Jesus name. Amen.

Good insights.

They sure had their Fake News and Spin in Jesus day. And He dealt with the politics.
