Larger Than Life: Billy Graham (1918–2018)
Desiring God ^ | 3/1/19 | John Piper

Posted on 02/21/2019 4:23:55 PM PST by OddLane

John Piper briefly met Billy Graham at a friend’s house as a teenager. Since then, Piper attended crusades and admired Graham’s ministry from afar, meeting him one more time just a few years ago.

In this short video, Piper reflects on Graham’s ministry and legacy. He says, “For me, personally, I would have to say that the greatest impact — since I was already a believer when I got to know who Billy Graham was — the greatest impact was that, today, I still love the old, old story. I love the gospel that Billy Graham preached...”

“Speaking to thousands of people on the second night of his crusade in New York City, Billy Graham stood by the side of former President Bill Clinton and his wife, Hillary. Graham said “Mrs. Clinton might make a good President.” He called Bill Clinton and his wife “wonderful friends” and “a great couple.” Graham said that the former President “should become an evangelist and allow his wife to run the country.”

After being endorsed by Graham, Hillary gave a “testimony” and former President Bill Clinton praised Graham for integrating his crusades in the late 1950’s.

So, Billy Graham thinks that Bill Clinton should become an evangelist – and Hillary should be President!”

He truly didn’t see the evil in people. He was a good man and brought many to Christ. But he was wrong about the Clintons.

This is the latest tomfoolery from Graham. In the early 1980’s he said there was no religious persecution under Communism in the Soviet Union. On a Larry King program a few years ago he said that people could be saved through other world religions without Christ. This was repeated on Robert Schuller’s television program. Now Billy Graham tells us that Bill Clinton should enter the field of evangelism and “Hillary might make a good President.” Many people will be deceived by Graham’s statement.

But the worst part of Billy Graham’s evangelism is his “decisionism.” Decisional evangelism, since the time of Charles Finney, has brought hundreds of thousands of people into the churches in an unconverted state. Decisional evangelism is responsible for the apostasy in the Congregational Church, the Methodist Church, the Presbyterian Church, and the various major Baptist denominations. Click here to read Dr. John S. Waldrip’s article, “How I Was Confronted with Decisionism,” and my sermons, “Natural Men Do Not Want the Gospel,” “We Are Against Decisionism – In Both its Main Forms,” and “Superficial Decisionism and True Revival Contrasted.” To understand how Finney ruined evangelism, subsequently followed by all evangelists, order a copy of my carefully documented book, “Today’s Apostasy,”

Many people come to faith in Christ at a definite point in time. I did.

Read Peter’s sermon in Acts 2:38-42. It was “decisional.”

“When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”

“Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”

“With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.

........

And if people come into a church in an “unconverted State,” great. More chances to hear and respond to the Gospel.

These are the exact people Christ was criticized for spending time with during His time on earth.

Well done Billy!

Certainly not. Nor do I think Billy would today. Who she is has become evident over the decades.

I would definitely say that who she was then was pretty evident. This forum was founded because of the Clinton’s.

His inability to flat out condemn all sodomy and all abortions has always bothered me.

Revel, I don’t know the dates at this point. I do know Billy tried to stay out of politics and used his position to try to reach Presidents in both parties.

And there are few on earth or who have lived on earth, that spread the Gospel more than Billy.

But like everyone God uses, he had flaws too.

I'm not a huge fan of "seeker-sensitive" churches, i.e. houses of worship catering to and structured around people that are lost.

That said, we are enjoined to bring people in from the wilderness.

And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.

And it seems like that was something Billy Graham was very good at.

I went to one of his crusades in the early 70s and thought he was good
but I do not believe a decision is what it takes, i think you either
believe or don’t.

I respected him as a person, not as a minister.

He was far too chummy and neutral towards the rich and powerful.

Jesus confronted the rich and powerful. He would not have given Bill Clinton a pass.

Billy Graham. Tony Campolo. All these “spiritual counselors” to presidents were spectacularly ineffective.
