DAY 5: 22 below zero

March 10, 2019

It was exactly ZERO degrees Fahrenheit for the 40 Days for Life kickoff rally in Milwaukee, Wisconsin…

…and the wind chill was a bone-chilling 22 degrees below zero (-30 Celsius).

“Wisconsinites don’t cancel because of the cold,” said longtime 40 Days for Life leader and volunteer Dan Miller. “It’s a way of life here.”

That’s a good thing for unborn children. The sacrifice of praying for an hour or two in an arctic blast inspires more mothers to choose life.

When the opening vigil with Bishop Jeffrey Haines ended, Dan said a young woman appeared “out of nowhere” to hug September, who leads the campaign in Milwaukee.

“Do you remember me?” she asked.

With everybody bundled up for the weather, it was hard to tell who anybody was, so the young woman continued, “You walked me to my car [last year] and talked me out of having the abortion!”

“There was a lot of jumping up and down…hootin’ and hollerin’ and praising God!” Dan said. “These two were filled with so much joy; it was quite the sight!”

As 40 Days for Life volunteers in northern climates like to remind me, there’s no such thing as a “spring” 40 Days for Life campaign–only a winter one.

There were plenty of volunteers out in miserable weather this week.

Eugene, Oregon

“I just had to share this historic photo–snow showers in Eugene for our kickoff rally today!” said Eileen, the local campaign leader. “This has never happened before. And the photo only shows half of the people who came today to pray in the snow!”

Eileen said the event drew plenty of young people–including the leaders of a new pro-life group–while Planned Parenthood staff members watched from the windows. “We were all loving praying in the snow.”

Thousand Oaks, California

In Southern California, the Lenten 40 Days for Life campaign really does take place in springtime weather.

That’s why Leonore was so surprised when she and her vigil partner noticed SNOW! “There were little flakes flying about,” she said.

The snow didn’t last long. The record-breaking rain, however, did. “It warmed my heart to join three others holding signs and umbrellas,” Leonore said.

The King will answer and say to them, “Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.” —Matthew 25:31-46

Gracious and merciful Father, we renew our dedication to defending the unborn and all whose right to life is compromised by our godless society’s selfish lack of concern. Free us from our own failures and sins so that we will be truly pro-life in every area of our lives.

DAY 7: Abortion quotas

March 12, 2019

Abortion is big business.

And the pressure to meet abortion sales quotas results in seedy sales tactics that end in the destruction of a baby.

In Fort Pierce, Florida, one frightened woman visited the abortion facility to find out how much an abortion would cost.

The price tag on her baby’s life? $500.

This mom wasn’t sure she wanted an abortion, so abortion facility staff members turned up the pressure. They offered her a discount–but only if she signed up right then and there for the abortion.

What’s next, “Abort now, and we’ll throw in a set of knives?”

The mother wasn’t quite ready to sign on the dotted line. That weekend, she went to church–where Fort Pierce 40 Days for Life volunteers were hosting a signup table. She took brochures from the volunteers, prayed on it, and chose life for her baby!

Abortion advocates justify abortion as a “thoughtful decision that no woman takes lightly.” But when push comes to shove, their primary concern is making the sale–even if that means resorting to tactics more fitting for a late-night “as seen on TV” infomercial.

Fortunately, in Fort Pierce, it didn’t work.

Many 40 Days for Life campaigns continue to persevere through difficult weather. Hang in there! Spring is coming.

Grand Rapids, Michigan

“We have had such faithful churches and individuals who have braved the bitter cold and snowy roads to pray for the most vulnerable in our city,” wrote the 40 Days for Life leadership team in Grand Rapids.

As the abortionist walked into work, he muttered under his breath, “When are you ever going to learn?” before glaring at the on-site sidewalk counselors.

That same day, the sidewalk counselors talked with the Stericycle truck driver, who had come to dispose of the remains of the babies aborted in Grand Rapids. One counselor even offered him a new job, but he didn’t respond.

“Through it all, we must continue to pray for the mothers, fathers, and babies,” wrote the leadership team.

Richmond, Virginia

“You would think that 7 AM on a very cold winter morning would NOT see a lot of people showing up to pray…” said Richmond coordinator Ann Niermeyer. “But you would be WRONG.”

About two dozen people came out for the vigil’s first hour. “Some people had been praying since the very first campaign in 2007, and some people came for the very first time.” Attendees were a mix of young and old volunteers, city dwellers and suburbanites, and at least six different Christian denominations.

The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed. —Luke 4:18-19

Lord, send us to the poorest, the most broken, the most captive, the most blind and the most oppressed in the world, the innocent pre-born children in their mother’s wombs that are scheduled for destruction. Help us to bring them healing, liberty, sight and justice through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
