Psalm 82

Psalm 82

A psalm of Asaph.

1 God presides in the great assembly;
    he renders judgment among the “gods”:
2 “How long will you[a] defend the unjust
    and show partiality to the wicked?[b]
3 Defend the weak and the fatherless;
    uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed.
4 Rescue the weak and the needy;
    deliver them from the hand of the wicked.

5 “The ‘gods’ know nothing, they understand nothing.
    They walk about in darkness;
    all the foundations of the earth are shaken.

6 “I said, ‘You are “gods”;
    you are all sons of the Most High.’
7 But you will die like mere mortals;
    you will fall like every other ruler.”

8 Rise up, O God, judge the earth,
    for all the nations are your inheritance.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Almighty Father,
We Come before You With Praise
And Thanksgiving in Our Hearts.
For You Alone Are Worthy;
You Alone Are LORD;
You Alone Are The One True God Of Abraham!
You Are The Source,
The Creator,
The Ancient of Days,
The Rock of All Ages,
Everlasting Father,
The One Eternal Master of the Universe!

1. God stands in the congregation of the mighty;
He judges among the gods.[a]
2.How long will you judge unjustly,
And show partiality to the wicked? Selah
3. Defend the poor and fatherless;
Do justice to the afflicted and needy.
4. Deliver the poor and needy;
Free them from the hand of the wicked.

Abba, Father, as You address in this Psalm,
The "gods",
The "mighty ones",
the Leaders,
the Legislators and Judges,
You Pour Out Your Righteous Wrath Upon Them,
For Judging Unjustly,
and Showing partiality to the Wicked!
We Thank You, LORD,
for this Psalm,
on This Very Day,
And we Plead with You on Behalf of Our Beloved Country,
That You Will Continue to Raise up Godly and Wise Leaders
who will Listen To Your Voice.

We ask that You Endow their Leaders
With a Double Portion of your Spirit,
As in Days of Old.
Father, Deliver us from Evil,
Narcissistic,
Greedy,
Corrupt men and women
who seek only to feed their own pockets and egos!

For the Sake of Your Anointed,
and For The Sake of Your Name,
We pray for the Peace of Jerusalem,
For Israel,
According to Your Word,
and Your Promise.

We Pray For Our President,
And other Leaders of Our Beloved USA
May They Receive Wisdom from You
To do the Right Thing.
We Pray For The Swift and Sure Coming of Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Establish His Kingdom,
and Make All Things Right.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Remember the YELLOW PAGES? Back in the day, I worked as a "Business Representative" for the Phone Company. Business people who needed to set up telephone service for their company came to me. My job was to question them about their business and suggest (sell) the number of lines, telephones, switchboards, call-directors, extension lines, etc. I also would suggest (sell) advertising in the Yellow Pages, to give them the most exposure for their business. A simple listing was free, bold-faced fonts a little bit each month, quarter, half, and full-page ads much more. It could add up to a huge monthly bill, but the catch was that phone service could not be turned off for an outstanding Yellow Pages bill, as long as the actual Telephone Bill for service was paid. Some customers caught on to this well-kept secret, and soon were getting free advertising.

Setting up a full-page ad in the Yellow Pages was tricky. In the days before computers, Graphic Design was actually done by hand. The customer could have his own design already done, and then would submit it to the Rep, who would proof-read it and send it in to be photocopied. Once the design was submitted, it was put in the book. An error could not be corrected for a whole year. All spelling and punctuation errors were sent out with the Yellow Pages and some of the results were hilarious. One that caused a huge lawsuit became a cautionary legend among us Reps:

Dr. Sam Smith, Psychotherapist"
was printed:
"Dr. Sam Smith, Psycho the rapist"

Punctuation and spacing are so important!

In the NIV version of Today's Psalm, we see punctuation that has a new meaning in modern usage. These are what are known as "scare quotes" or in conversation, "Air Quotes". "Air Quotes" require an actual physical gesture of making quotation marks in the air with one's fingers. "Scare Quotes" are used in journalism to denote sarcasm. Although the Ancient Hebrew Texts did not even have VOWELS, much less punctuation, the use of Scare Quotes around the word "gods" (lower-case g) makes sense, as the Psalmist believes in The One True God. So who are these "gods" in Scare Quotes?

There are several possibilities:

1. Unjust Rulers of Israel: This is not far-fetched at all. We even acknowledge such characters in our own government who think they are "gods", also known as "The Beltway", "The Swamp", or the "Deep State". These guys oppress the poor, break the law with impunity, and abuse their power to get what they want. This is in direct opposition to the godly, Biblical role of kings, which is to love justice, judge in righteousness, and defend the weak and oppressed.

2. Pagan Kings of Surrounding Countries: In the Ancient World, civilizations not only believed in the divine right of kings, they believed that their kings WERE divine. This superstitious attribution of godhood went all the way back to the Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt, throughout Mesopotamia, and right up to the supposedly-civilized Romans.

3. The False Idols of the Surrounding Nations: In Ancient Times, nations were identified with their "gods". Each country and culture was interwoven with religion so much that the "god" represented the entire culture.

Whatever the original meaning of "gods" (perhaps all three!), the "Scare Quotes" are an appropriate punctuation in this modern translation. Jesus mentioned this Psalm in John 10:34. He was not being at all complimentary when He said, "Is it not written in your Law, 'I have said you are "gods"'? This statement was in the form of a rebuke, and I can even imagine "Air Quotes" around the word "gods".

Verse 6 and 7 are the pivot point in this Psalm. Those who set themselves as "gods" will face Judgement from The One True God.

And that is scarier than any "Scare Quotes" can express.

They are Orthodox and Catholic, Protestant and Evangelical, Coptic, Pentecostal, and Baptist. To the persecutors, we are all "Nazarenes."
