The now-standard depictions of angels were chosen by men during the Renaissance. They were influenced by classical (Greek and Roman) styles of showing gods, goddesses, and heroes.
Angels are presented in masculine terms in the Bible. However, as incorporeal spirits, they are neither male nor female.

Once they leave their ‘first estate’ they are male, thus they chose them wives of any and all they desired and fathered offspring who were ‘mighty men of old’.
With other grandchildren we took our smart, precocious 8 year old grand daughter who is currently aware of sex differences — organs, coloration, size etcetera. She spent some time going sround saying, ‘well that’s a boy.’
It looses interest as we get older.
