Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

(Music in The Bible)

Psalm 88

Psalm 88[a]

A song. A psalm of the Sons of Korah. For the director of music. According to mahalath leannoth.[b] A maskil[c] of Heman the Ezrahite.

1 Lord, you are the God who saves me;
    day and night I cry out to you.
2 May my prayer come before you;
    turn your ear to my cry.

3 I am overwhelmed with troubles
    and my life draws near to death.
4 I am counted among those who go down to the pit;
    I am like one without strength.
5 I am set apart with the dead,
    like the slain who lie in the grave,
whom you remember no more,
    who are cut off from your care.

6 You have put me in the lowest pit,
    in the darkest depths.
7 Your wrath lies heavily on me;
    you have overwhelmed me with all your waves.[d]
8 You have taken from me my closest friends
    and have made me repulsive to them.
I am confined and cannot escape;
9     my eyes are dim with grief.

I call to you, Lord, every day;
    I spread out my hands to you.
10 Do you show your wonders to the dead?
    Do their spirits rise up and praise you?
11 Is your love declared in the grave,
    your faithfulness in Destruction[e]?
12 Are your wonders known in the place of darkness,
    or your righteous deeds in the land of oblivion?

13 But I cry to you for help, Lord;
    in the morning my prayer comes before you.
14 Why, Lord, do you reject me
    and hide your face from me?

15 From my youth I have suffered and been close to death;
    I have borne your terrors and am in despair.
16 Your wrath has swept over me;
    your terrors have destroyed me.
17 All day long they surround me like a flood;
    they have completely engulfed me.
18 You have taken from me friend and neighbor—
    darkness is my closest friend.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Our Father in Heaven,
How Hallowed,
Magnificent,
and Sanctified
is Your Most Holy Name!
How Blessed and How True is Your Word,
and How Mighty!
How Glorious,
to Span the Ages,
To be Unfettered by Time and Space,
To Know The End from the Beginning
and the beginning from The End!
For it is You, Oh LORD,
Who designed the Galaxies with Your Compass,
And Mapped Out the Vast Reaches of Space
With Your Word and Your Omniscient Imagination!
Scientists tell us even the heavens are finite.
But YOU are Infinite!
LORD, remind us ALWAYS to Worship You,
and not Your Creation.
Your creation is there but to proclaim YOUR GLORY.
Hallelujah and Amen.

We pray blessing upon the People You have Chosen,
In Your Sovereignty and Grace,
To be the vessels of Your Word,
Your Law, Your Redemption,
and Your Messiah.

Teach us to walk humbly before You,
As we Marvel at Your Transcendence of Time and Space,
And How You Bring All Things Together For Good
For Those Who Love You
and Are Called According To Your Purpose!

We Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem,
According to your Will and Promise.

We Pray For Our President,
And other Leaders of Our Beloved USA
May They Receive Wisdom from You
To do the Right Thing.
We Pray For The Swift and Sure Coming of Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Establish His Kingdom,
and Make All Things Right.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The amazing songwriters of what we now call The Great American Songbook went about creating these musical gems in a number of different ways. Sometimes, one person wrote both the music and the lyrics. Cole Porter and Irving Berlin are prime examples of that approach.

Sometimes, the music was written first, and the lyricist would write to the music. Jerome Kern wrote every note of music for Showboat before Oscar Hammerstein II wrote a single lyric.

And, then came the most difficult way of writing a song (in my humble opinion). That is setting someone else's poetry to music. And, this is the way is usually is done. It has always seemed easier to write lyrics to an existing tune, which is why song parodies are so common, and often hilarious. The rhythm, cadence, pattern, and structure are already there!

This Psalm is attributed to Heman The Ezrahite. Although the composer of this Psalm is rather obscure, he did get included in "The Great Hebrew Songbook". This Psalm appears to have been written as an appeal to God from somebody who is on the brink of Death, but since we ALL die eventually, and we all have suffered loss, it is an important Psalm to consider.

What struck me is that Heman has the same intimacy with God as David and Asaph. He asks rhetorically (and a little boldly) "Can the DEAD praise You?"

And yet, Heman concludes his song with praise and trust in God.

It is a difficult and powerful Psalm, but please, don't ask me to try and set it to MUSIC!
