He joined the Jesuits in ‘58 so his novitiate was pre-conciliar.
Quality varied. I think the two that I knew growing up and the four I’ve spent time since then are smarter than he.
Quality also depended on province. I think Argentina was probably pretty far down there in terms of quality. The U.S. north east was very high (the Jesuits I knew growing up were part of the Oregon province).
I’ll bet the shortest rout to women clergy would be Bishops jettisoning the priesthood and rely on lay functionaries.
