Never, ever donate to CCHD. A few years back, my local pastor, who’s pretty good, said something along the lines of “The 2nd collection today is for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. They make us take up this collection, but the money goes to a lot of questionable groups, so I won’t be donating.” Most parishioners who were paying attention took the signal and sat on their hands. Sadly, the next year, I noticed that he didn’t do any disclaimer. Always wondered if someone complained to the bishop.
Sometimes in a Catholic parish, if a special collection falls short of the diocesan goal, the priest just takes the balance out of the regular collection funds.
