We need to restore REAL FREEDOM. Low taxes, no welfare, no public spending on healthcare or education. No minimum wages or government-mandated work rules. A tiny government. Few regulations and fewer rules related to zoning or building codes.

Of course, if we’re going to return to freedom, we have to understand what that means. Unbridled opportunity also means unbridled risks. Some people WILL be left behind. America will have to be once again no place for the slothful or the stupid. Those traits will have consequences.

The great economist Tyler Cowen talks of “recreating a Mexico-like or
Brazil-like environment” in some places. That means allowing the creation of shanty towns with little or no plumbing or access to clean water as we now define it. That’s where the “poor” will really feel the weight of their bad choices. The existence of that kind of poverty will be a powerful motivator for most Americans — who will rise to the challenge of avoiding it. In short: The wages of sin really will be death. But prosperity will have no upper limit.

Yet somehow the countries where the conditions you describe are allowed to exist on any significant scale are all shithole countries without exception, where poverty and corruption are rife and where civilization and rule of law are mostly absent. They live like that generation to generation and for the majority of their populations, don’t pull themselves up by the bootstraps, or right their own country. Ever. Instead they all desire to come here and they always have, even before we had the social welfare state. There is something missing from your equation. I wonder what it is.
