Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Bishop John M. Quinn of Winona-Rochester, Minnesota, and named as his successor Auxiliary Bishop Robert E. Barron of Los Angeles.

A press conference will be available via live stream at 11 a.m. central time, June 2, at www.dowr.org . His installation Mass has been set for Friday, July 29.

Bishop Barron, 62, is a Chicago native who has been a Los Angeles auxiliary bishop since 2015. He also is the founder of Word on Fire Catholic Ministries.

Bishop Quinn, who has headed the Diocese of Winona-Rochester for 13 years, is 76 years old. Canon law requires bishops to submit their resignation to the pope when they turn 75.

The changes were announced in Washington June 2 by Archbishop Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio to the U.S.

“I look forward immensely to getting to know the good people, priests, and pastoral ministers of the diocese,” Bishop Barron said in a news release June 2 from the Diocese of Winona-Rochester. “I will have to brush off my Chicago winter coat, which has remained unused for the past six years in Santa Barbara! My fondest hope is that I might be a good spiritual father to all the Catholics of southern Minnesota.”

Los Angeles Auxiliary Bishop Robert E. Barron speaks at the spring general assembly of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops in Baltimore in this June 11, 2019, file photo. (CNS photo/Bob Roller) Bishop Quinn said he is “filled with joy” regarding the appointment. “His commitment to evangelization and missionary discipleship will bear great fruit in the coming years,” he said.

Bishop Barron, 62, was born in Chicago, spending his childhood in Detroit and then in a suburb of Chicago. He studied at Mundelein Seminary in Chicago and at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., before being ordained a priest on May 24, 1986.

After serving as an associate pastor for three years, he studied at the Institut Catholique de Paris, where he completed his doctorate of sacred theology. He served as a professor of theology at Mundelein Seminary from 1992 to 2015 and also served as its president-rector from 2012 to 2015.

Bishop Barron launched Word on Fire Catholic Ministries in 2000. His 10-part documentary, “Catholicism,” aired on public television in the United States.

The Word on Fire website hosts daily blog posts, weekly articles and video commentaries, and Bishop Barron has over 3.1 million Facebook followers, 517,000 YouTube subscribers, 349,000 Instagram followers, and 198,000 Twitter followers.

The Diocese of Winona-Rochester comprises 20 counties in southern Minnesota and has a Catholic population of 132,825.

Movin' on up.

Sinking ship "Word on Fire Ministries happily left behind like so much flotsam and jetsom.

We'll see how he handles this Minnesota Diocese's financial problems which (no surprise)...stem from liability to victims of Ted McCarrick-type priestly misbehavior.

Barron is not the best. But he’s not the worst either. On the Bergoglian disaster scale, this one doesn’t really move the needle.

He knows how to get the bills paid. The other stuff, of which there’s plenty, they don’t care about.

We lived in this diocese for a couple of years, way back. Lovely spot but quite a switch from LA.

Not the worst, huh?

When he ceases disproportionately hiring, with inflated salaries, musclebound, garishly tattooed young men as his personal assistants, maybe then we should “circle back” on the question of whether he is not the worst.

His new diocese may be far from LA from a geographical standpoint, but judging from the diocese’s financial problems arising from Ted McCarrick-type misbehavior, it’s giving LA a run for it’s money in terms of priestly immorality.

Fair enough, but by “not the worst” I meant in comparison to the likes of Cupich, McElroy and Stowe who are constantly in attack mode against conservatives and traditionalists... while constantly doing the bidding of abortionists and LGBTs.

Not surprising. Like “Wilting Gregory”, Boobie Barron is one the Chicago “boys” of the late Joseph Bernadin’s, a homosexual bishop.

Barron is not the best.

He would also agree with you on that...

Though, since you have some insight, or idea of best and worst...
Would you mind sharing Who then, do you think is the "best" (or better) person or cleric? One who is as successful in bringing the Catholic faith to people throughout the world?

If he's not the "best" as you acclaim -
please share ... who you would name as your ideal as 'best" - when it comes to evangelization Christ to the Culture?

Saved by “Conscience”? The Gospel According to Barron

Barron doesn't "evangelize"; he "appeases" and "accompanies" souls in whatever sect they may be in because Barron dares hope Hell is empty, despite Jesus Christ's very words to the contrary.

Ask Ben Shapiro, Murph.

Barron's a perfect frankenbishop; don't be surprised if Barron is a cardinal before Bergoglio's reign of terror is over.

Might as well throw out a name,

Who's better at reaching Catholics?

Strickland, Paprocki, Cordileone, etc.

Murph, what about reaching out to non-catholics; instead of telling them lies?

There is nothing wrong with hoping hell is empty (of human souls). God himself says through the Apostles in two different spots that He desires that all men know the truth and be saved. Hoping for what God hopes for is never wrong.

That is of course a far cry from preaching that hell is empty, or that hell's emptiness is in fact a reasonably likely conclusion from the evidence. Scripture seems clear that Judas is not among the saved.

Scripture seems clear that Judas is not among the saved.

Scripture is also quite clear that there are a multitude of souls in Hell, not just one. To hope otherwise, is to hope Scripture is wrong and Jesus was lying.
